Sensible Turbo Change

Featured Replies

Morning Gents,

I am due to change my original KKK turbo which seems to have given up the ghost at 113k.

My VRS is remapped but only to 160bhp and used as a sensible daily driver rather than a boy racer car. It has been mapped for 30k miles.

With the hassle/cost this turbo boom has given me, part of me is a little concerned that the changing to a like for like PD130 turbo again with a remap, is going to put me in a similar scenario where I counting down to another failed turbo.

I have a re manufactured garrett PD130 coming from the turbo clinic in leeds (who my garage has used for years) which hopefully be a little more trustworthy than the original KKK. The price including delivery is £330.

I am not looking for performance etc.. I just want my car back working, so in your opinions do you feel like I would be "safe" going down this route, or would you take the map off just to be sure.

Finally, can you advise of the other bits I need to purchase to ensure that the swap is done correctly i.e oil feed, oil change etc..

Thanks in advance

Can't comment on the additional swaps, I think an oil change is always recommended in case any bit of the impeller found it's way into the engine (hopefully not!).

I have read previously though that Garrett turbos are much more reliable than the original kkk versions.

So all being well you should be fine to keep the map on. Especially if, as you say, it is driven sensibly.

Hope it all works out smoothly for you.

Should be fine, always worth following the advice from turbo suppliers when fitted a new or recon turbo. They will provide literature when you get one, normally this will include -

A new oil supply pipe

New oil and filter

Prime the turbo correctly with oil before starting up

If they old turbo has broken up a thorough clean and inspection of the entire intake system.

Should be fine. Best loging group 11 in VCDS lite to check for any overboost.

Cheers Faboka..

I have had the remap on the car for around 35k Miles up to 113k so would have thought map is fine. (Ex Audi engineer did this for me)

Just found out seals on turbo went and intercooler was full of oil.

Paid 330 for Garrett equivalent (in exchange for mine) with 24 months guarantee from turbo clinic in Leeds

After all that just had an email to say there is no Garrett in Stock only the Borg Warner one.

He sold me on the fact that I need a GARRETT rather than a Borg Warner one. He only has the Borg Warner available.

Any thoughts?

An idea on model of Garrett that would bolt on to a 2004 VRs ASZ?

It's more to check the new turbo is setup correctly with actuator length and stop screw.

Any gt1749va with integrated manifold should fit. The compressor housing will need to be clocked 90 degrees.

Would you advise against putting another Borg Warner on there?

Its mapped to 160bhp

My KKK runs fine, it'll go bang now lol.

Found out recently that the same KKK turbo used on the pd130 was also used in the pd150 ford Galaxy.

IMO a better option would be a more modern turbo or minor hybrid (Xman 1749VC on a 1.9 TDI manifold). Or even the 1749VB off the PD150 Golf or Ibiza PD160.

Would need remapping but if done sympathetically, would stress components less less simply running a 1749VA or KKK.

The reason i ask is that I have been offered an untouched NEW KKK one for 400 and didn't know whether to take that or pay 330 for a remanufactured Garrett

Would the turbo seals failing put a decent amount of oil into the intercooler?

Vb out performs a VC hybrid any day of the week.

Yeah pretty much, usually the bottom pipe starst weeping oil first, remove it and see what drips out!

Id personally upgrade to a hybrid and forget about it, at least its a stronger turbo so SHOULD outlast the standard turbos.

I would prefer a bolt on turbo without the need for a remap.

Not really after performance, just reliability

I see, that looks quite bad if all that oil came out of the intercooler!

a GT1756 will almost bolt on straight away and good for around 220bhp, 200 without pushing it, so a nice safe option if your happy with less power, so in my eyes good for reliablilty.

on the other hand, if your happy with the standard power then i guess a stock turbo will last another 100k miles or so if looked after. I cant see any problem with the £330 option you had or the brand new £400 KKK unit, both will work fine and last a long time id hope.

I was driving at 70 mph on the motorway and all of a sudden it just wouldn't accelerate anymore and came to a stop. It starts up and ticks over but no response from accelerator pedal on the Speedo needle. It Obviously couldnt breath anymore

Stick to the oem turbo. If you really want an upgrade then a oem GT1749VB of a ARL.

Turbo is now off. Seized to shhhiiitt lol.

Faboka - KKK ok with 160bhp remap?

Yes it will, the housing needs rotating to meet up with the boost pipes. It's a 5 minute job. It's worth buying the braided oil line too.

That price doesn't include vat so bare that in mind. You'll also need to buy blanks for the egr.

Phone them up and have a word. There really helpful and will give you all the information you'll need.

KKK arnt as bad as people make out so yes fine with a remap.

But yes that pd150 turbo is fine just remember you need to add vat to that price :)
