Changing a steering arm. Is it easy? Or not...

Featured Replies

2001 1.4mpi estate. Among other things for my MoT I bought the above part today. Steering arm goes between the steering rack and track rod end.

How easy (or difficult..) is it to change this yourself? Looking at the steering arm it looks simple, but perhaps it's one to leave to my garage, as I see there is a rubber gaitor to deal with and a slightly rusty looking fit to the track rod end. I changed the anti roll bar links today and am planning rear shocks tomorrow. Just a thought to try this too but I don't want to mess it up

Many thanks

its fairly easy if you have the tools, alot harder if you dont.

you'll need some large spanners, 22mm/24mm for the locking nut on the track rod end, crack that off and then undo the trackrod end and remove it.

Remove the metal clips that hold the boot over the steering rack, these can be a pain to remove also, so a small grinder or long hook is good for those.

you then need a large craw foot spanner, not sure on the size, sorry. I've changed them before just using mole grips but they need to be very tight and good quality ones.

unwind it, fit new one (i apply locktight comestimes) fit boot, fit track rod end, job done really.

Thats a rough idea of how its done, space is limited and the part can be a pain to remove, its worth getting a price on how much a garage would want, if its around £30 id let them do it. if you do it, remember to keep count of the threads so the tracking isnt miles out, but will more than likley need tracking again once its fitted.

Not too bad if you've got the right size crow's foot. I use an adjustable one and it can be a bit of a bugger if you can't get lined up right on it.

Changing the end at the same time as you can just match the length of the old and new rods until you can get it tracked properly.

Sorry not replying. Seem to often not get sent notification of responses even when ticking box

Thanks very much for explanation/help, but I am just going to leave it for the garage to do.

Thanks for the replies.
