Octavia vRS wheel bearing

Featured Replies

Last week my car started making a whining/droning sound, quite suddenly out of the blue. It's definitely road speed related, and worst at about 25-40 mph. I assumed it was a wheel bearing, so I jacked up each wheel in turn and found that the near side front wheel made a whining noise when turned by hand - the other three wheels were fine. Anyway, I took it to the dealer who replaced the NSF wheel bearing, but the noise is still present and just as loud. They said that replacing the front bearing had revealed more noise from the near side rear bearing, and this would need to be replaced too. Am I really that unlucky to have two bearings fail at the exact same time? :(

The thing is, turning the front wheel (the one with the new bearing) by hand still results in the same whining noise. So is this just a red herring or could it indicate that something else is the cause of the problem? Any ideas would be much appreciated!

In my experience you should be able to work out which corner of the car the noise is coming whilst driving - although it doesn't make things easy if more than one wheel bearing is shot! Take someone in the car with you to help if necessary. If there is still noise from the front NS then there must be a different cause.

A thought, have you got the same tyres all round?

I'd imagine it would be hard to make a wheel bearing groan by turning by hand... that usually only happens as speed increases.

Another way to feel a dodgy bearing is jack up the suspect corner and turn the wheel 360 degrees by hand but do it slow and keep hold of it and feel for any lumpiness as it turns. It should be completely smooth. If not, its knackered.

I think I may have the same problem - was your fixed whilst under warranty? mines just out so I need to know what to expect cost wise.

cheers,

Phil

its not tyre related cause you get the noise with the wheel off the ground and i would disagree that the rear bearing is faulty cause you have the noise on the front still (with the wheel off the ground again)...

i would try the dealers again and tell themm what you have found... maybe ask to speak to the service manager. you could also try Skoda customer services to see if they have any info on this problem.
