12v Socket

Featured Replies

Hi

The lighter socket on my car is very temperamental. I have a 3 way usb adapter on it. Currently there is no power. I have had this before and it has come back by itself. No great power drain. 2 iphones and a fitbit charger cable.

I have checked yellow fuse 40 and it is fine. Before I start searching is there any protection that I am missing such as thermal cut outs etc?

Thanks

Garnett

Are you certain it isn't the three-way that is bad? I've had a few car USB chargers go bad.

The standard socket fitted to most VW based cars today are missing two spring clips at the very bottom of the socket.

These were used to hold the cigarette lighter centre in contact with the 12volt tip in the bottom while it heated up.

That is why you need to order a smokers pack when buying the car, and then you will get the hold in socket.

What I am getting to is that a lot of third party items require that clip in the bottom to hold them in contact. It is like a wedge shaped ring on the bottom of the bit that plugs in

I am just waiting for the delivery of the correct socket so that not only can I light a cigarette, but also get a few other bits plugged in there without them coming loose and losing contact.

I have also got a 3rd party lighter socket that only cost a couple of quid off Eblag (including the cigarette lighter), that has these clips in, so when the other one turns up, I will see if they are interchangeable, so that I can modify the socket in the boot as well.

Hope this helps

Can I ask, does the lighter socket on the MK III Octavia remain live when ignition turned off? On the latest Golf this turns off after a few minutes

Could it not be the fuse on your 3 way splitter?

Yes.

is there a 12v socket in the octy3 estate boot anywhere?

Yes, on the left hand side in UK models.

Thanks - it was the spring clips!

You can change the lighter socket easily from switched live to permanent live by moving the 20 Amp fuse:

If you look at the second picture (fuse box) in the first thread the 20 Amp fuse for the lighter is in the switched live position. Move it upwards so that it is in line with the other fuses in the row and it will be in the permanent live position. Note this is from the Seat Leon forum so the Octavia fuse is already in the upper position.

I'm sure people on here have tried that and it doesn't work on the O3.....

Garnett,

The correct lighter is off eblag for £17 delivered, takes about 10 days.

Item # 161829794645

But you do need to make up a little tool out of a cheapo pair of long nose pliers to get the old metal centre out, then that allows you to get the outer plastic out by just pulling on it.
There is a special tool for removal, but they do cost around £30 and I have yet to see one for sale.

It's been a while since I hard wired my dashcam - can't remember if I piggy backed onto the 20 Amp in switched live postn or rear wiper blade fuse - it was belting down, pitch black and I dropped one of the sprung clips down the trim which ended up under the carpet much to my frustration. I'm pretty sure it worked ok though. I will test again, but reassembling the damper on the glove box was a right PITA!

As Neily07 said, this doesn't work on the O3.

For some strange reason Skoda penny pinched on the fusebox and the switched live terminal isn't there.

So why not just get a fuse box repair cable from the dealer and put a switched live into either the base of the switched side of fuse 40?

Alternatively use said repair wires to connect to an unused fuse location.
