It's not perfect but my knowledge of photoshop doesn't really allow me to replace segments of a picture with something else that's not there.

 

I've copied the square of floor above the rug and placed it over the rug and then (quite poorly) blended the multiple squares together.

Guess it depends how big the canvas is going to be to how noticable it'll be.

 

The only other option i guess would be to cut your dog out of your pictures and put him on another dark wood floor.

Tricky to get the edges of the dog right and match up the perspective though...

 

Might i suggest it'd be a load easier to have a tidy up and then take some new pictures :D
