New car protection

Featured Replies

What products should i buy for doing a new car protection on my car?

Already do the 2 bucket method and use a dooka pad for the bodywork. Got wax but not sure if i'm better having a sealant too and/or polish? I have alloy wheel cleaner but is there a sealant for them too?

As for the insides, i have leather seats and just bought Autobrite revive leather cream. Will this be ok or so i need something different or more for the insides?

The last new car I sealed with a polymer sealant (menzerna powerlock).  Was a local chap with a white octy 3 estate.  Finish was superb.

Even though the car was new, I still decontaminated and gave a brief gentle machine polish before applying the powerlock.

I use poorboys wheel sealant although there are quite tasty sealants.  I have a bottle of carpro hydro2 that I am building up courage to try on my own car.

Nice to see you offering advice Jason.. Well overdue and simple and to the point

I would do a light polish after decontamination too

I last did this and applied a sealant and a wax

Certainly - as Jason says.... decontamination is the key stage here.

A good fallout remover is very important, then perhaps clay then a paint cleanser/light polish would be good routine.

Sounds like you have the wash products sorted - 2BM and dooka pad.

Wheels - again a good decontamination and properly sealed - perhaps ceramic on alloys is best.

But plenty low cost sealants such as FK1000p would work well on wheels and paint alike.

Glass Exterior - I would recommend Gtechniq G5 as an easy to use sealant/repellent.

Then look at your sealant/wax of choice..... and get a couple of layers on if possible.

Let us know how you get on...

As I've just done mine two months ago this is what I used.

Pre rise with Jet wash, then ValetPro Snowfoam and leave to work it's magic.

Rise followed by two bucket was with lambs wool mitt using Meguires Glass gold shampoo.

Rise off and if needed second wash.

Iron X fallout remover (I cannot believe how much fallout is on a new car - you'd be shocked.

Rise.....and rise and rise to make sure it's all off.

Snowfoam once again and allow to work, followed by another rise.

At this point check the paintwork, if it needs claying - go down that route, followed by another wash and rise.

Dry car - (I used a poorbuys waffle towel)

Once you've clean (including door shuts etc) it's time to wax/seal.

Waxing/sealing - bodywork and door/bonnet/boot shuts

First of all I used poorboys Diamond White, used and  once buffed off left to cure for a hour or so (lunch/coffee/tea break).

Second coat Colinite 476.

Engine bay I used a microfiber to dust/clean and then finished off with AG vinyl/plastic trim protection on a new washing up sponge

Wheels:

Clean as you go I used Sonax extreme wheel cleaner - very good and smells nice.

Finished with Poorboys alloy wheel sealent and Colinite 476.

Interior I used a microfiber and brushes to dust/clean and than again AG vinyl stuff on a clean sponge

Glass I used RainX I think, I can't remember the name of the top of my head. Put it repels water.

Hope that helps

Car is then ready to go

I have everything except the sealant and rain repellant. What does the rain repellant actually do?

Anyone got a link to a decent sealant for the bodywork and wheels?

Rain Repellent greatly improves visibility through your windscreen in rainy and wet conditions...basically.

It is specifically designed to help to repel water from your windscreen (glass) improving wet weather driving visibility.

Exceptional windscreen repellents can also been formulated to help prevent the build-up of ice, helping to keep your windscreen frost free.

Long-lasting rain repellent is highly effective at breaking up water molecules, helping to dissipate them from your windscreen with a hydrophobic action.

There are plenty on the market - but some are easier to use than others. My preference is Gtechniq G5 which I use on all my exterior glass.

Rain repellent is essentially a glass sealant

It repels water and also helps to keep your glass clean

I use two types:

1. Clear liquid type: Powermaxed Rain Off..... http://www.powermaxed.com/clean-your-car/rain-off-glass-sealant

2. Polish type ( Usually white or Pink with apolish consistency) : Gtechniq G5......http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/gtechniq/g5-clearvision-glass-coat.aspx

There is another type, Ive not used...3. Ceramic Glass Sealant...but Ive read can be tricky to apply

http://www.theultimatefinish.co.uk/gtechniq/g1-clearvision-smart-glass.aspx

As regard to Bodywork Sealant....There are many

Again..I have used many

Try these Ive used:

Optimum Optiseal...Simple to use: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sealants/optimum-opti-seal/prod_775.html

SONAX Xtreme Protect & Shine Hybrid NPT: http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sealants/sonax-xtreme-protect-shine-hybrid-npt/prod_1200.html

Bilt Hamer Autobalm:  http://www.cleanyourcar.co.uk/sealants/bilt-hamber-auto-balm/prod_1175.html

Prior to converting to GTechniq range, I regularly used Optimum Optiseal and found it very effective. Simple and quick to use.

Thanks for the replies.

What do you use to decontamite the bodywork and wheels? Even though the car will be new (when i finally pick it up in March) it will still be dirty for my standards. I've got a clay mitt which i havn't actually used yet but not sure if it's better with a clay bar?

After washing, I spray the car with with Gyeon  Q2M Iron

Pressure wash off, then spray with Auto Smart Tardis, tar remover and wipe off

Then a light clay to finish

Thanks for the replies.

Decontaminate with any well known fallout remover.... such as Iron-X, BH-Korrosol,  or similar.

Also assess any tar spots and remove at this stage too..... normally with another wash/rinse thereafter - in my routine.

Clay mitt is fast and effective - just ensure you use a good lubricant or shampoo mix to help during claying process and minimise any marring, if possible

Perfect!

Just need to wait to pick my car and then i need to wait for a day where it won't rain (so i may need to take the car on holiday with me haha).

Glad I could help

Good luck

This is exactly what I do. Remove any Tar prior to claying, mitt or bar. Personally prefer clay bars.

Iron-X is a great product for getting rid of bonded fall out. Watch it bleed, and pressure rinse. Just Don't let it dry.

Other than what you've been advised with here, you should be pretty much sorted mate. :)

After i have put the sealant on, do i put polish and then wax or do i put the polish on first? Can i do it all one after another or do i need to wait a day or so?

Sealant is applied to paintwork...If you want to add a wax over the top, then fine, but not necessary

Polish has grades of abrasives in which clean to remove paint, either by hand or Machine

You can polish prior to sealant but you must remove it completely with Alcohol or CarPro Eraser or Gyeon Prep...Most Sealants need to bond to clean paint

Have a good read here:

Where are you located? Maybe someone from here could help...

I've already got snow foam, 2 bucket method, dooka pad, wheel cleaner, tyre shine etc etc.

I bought The CHASM wax in Autobrites sale..will this be ok yes?

My current Autobrite polish is almost ran out, what polish do you recommend?

Will OptimumOptii-Seal be a good sealant for the bodywork and the wheels or do i need a different one for the wheels?

As for Iron X, do i just spray it over the whole car and rub it with a damp spong and then power rinse off?

GTechniq G5 for the windows, how is this applied as the reviews seem to say the bottle doesn't say?

As for the inside, do i need to 'protect' anything there or just the usual interier spray stuff be fine? I bought this for the leather seats http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/index.php/autobrite-revive-leather-conditioner-250ml.html

Sorry for all the questions, just don't fancy paying someone else to do it as i would rather i do it, plus it will work out a lot cheaper too.

Everyone want to answer don't they

I'm going to leave it to the others

Good luck

What's that supposed to mean?

That's what a forum is about. Helping out. The more input this chap gets, the better for himself.

The chasm wax I'm not aware of so can't help but certain waxes hold different durability.

Iron X - spray all over the car, leave to dwell for 5-7 minutes & pressure rinse. Doesnt really need any agitation.

G5 - apply with either a Microfiber applicator or a makeup pad (what I use).. not used G5 myself but others I've used is usually apply in small circular motion, leave to haze (5-10) minutes, buff off. Wait 30 minutes apply second coat.

Optiseal, someone else will be able to help on that as I've never used it.

Polish - Certain polishes have fillers in to 'mask defects' - if your wanting to remove youll need a polish dedicated for that I:E - Autobrite enrich - meguires M205 - tonnes on the market. Read some reviews online & watch a few videos on YouTube to help you decide on what you require.

We're a helpful bunch on here mate & everyone has personal preference. It's down to what you need, prefer to use & what works for yourself.

Very simple to use - spray on, wipe on and walk away. It's that simple.

You could use on wheels if you want or try a dedicated wheel sealant - Carbon Collective Platinum Wheel sealant for instance.
