you mentioned fake plates there , i was at the national meet in summer, and driving round the track at Rockingham, so I put my "show" plates on (they say sharkrider) ....

 

swmbo drove home...... we drove about an hour.... up the A1..... stoppped for fuel.... plates were still on! :o we didn't get stopped by the police, and no one even flashed us!  :o madness.

 

I am guessing you've most likely driven around with a student once or twice without fitting your L-plates/roofbox. Not that I'm admitting doing that, officer! It is very easy to overlook, probably why most folk who teach family, etc leave L-plates on when they are driving and the learner is not, which in its-self is illegal.

Must have looked funny though.
