Check your clutch! Very expensive known fault.

Featured Replies

Took my Superb in last week with noise coming from the clutch.  Collected it today and took it straight back.

Current bill (parts, no labour) was around 2000 EUR (thankfully still in warranty) and at 111,000km (around 75,000miles?).  Drove it back to work and there was still noise coming from the clutch so took it straight back to the dealer.

Repairs so far:  replaced clutch pressure plate assembly, replaced clutch disk, replaced flywheel, replaced clutch housing.

Mechanic showed me pictures and the official Skoda documents advising that this fault is known.  Bear in mind my car is in Slovakia, things may be different in UK.

You cannot hear the fault under normal driving conditions from inside.  You must have the window down, radio off and have no background noise.  Ideally near a wall so the sound bounces back.  When the clutch pedal is released there is a regular scraping noise, but it is intermittent and sometimes very quiet, so check it a couple of times.  Mine only occurred about 70% of the time.  Once the clutch pedal is pressed, there is no noise.  Try pressing and releasing the pedal a few times when stationary and if you hear any form of scraping have it checked out.  My car is LHD so it may be difficult to hear on a RHD car, in which case listed from outside and get a friend to press/release the clutch.

Noticed mine at a McDonald's drive through...otherwise would never have known and I dread to think how much money this would cots outside of warranty... minimum 2500EUR with labour.

One more thing.... the actual fault was a sheered bit off the clutch pressure plate

It's a known fault but the dealer still replaced bits at random?

Sounds a little worrying for anyone trying to have the fault diagnosed outside of warranty.

It is a shame you didn't get to take pictures of the paperwork that suggested it was a known fault.

Skoda UK are always very quick to deny they've had common complaints before and often dismiss out-of-warranty claims as one off's.

Problem with Sachs clutch pressure plates failing and machining through gearbox casing. Affects the 6 speed 2.0 diesel manual gearbox with concentric slave cylinder

In addition concentric slave cylinder/release bearing can fail dropping clutch/break fluid. Gearbox out job as release bearing/cylinder has input shaft through it, clutch normally gets wet with clutch/break fluid as well

I asked him to print me a copy of the paperwork but he made a polite excuse that he couldn't.  He did show me his computer screen and said it was a known fault that has been documented.  The photos of my car looked very similar to those from Skoda.

The bits were replaced as the damaged pressure plate seemed to have caused other damage to other components.

That sounds like exactly the same issue I have.  'Fortunately' I heard some noises before the warranty expired otherwise I would have been facing the same bills.

If anyone else has a Superb which is in warranty, get it checked.  If yours isn't in warranty, I hope you don't experience this fault.

The more failures that are documented in one thread the more evidence future sufferers will have to go back to Skoda and ask for an out-of-warranty gesture of goodwill towards the repair costs.

"clutch/break fluid as well"

Bad spulling night!

I had mine done around six thousand mile ago. As the OP the splines came away from the pressure plate.

Btw my mileage is at 50850 miles now and it will be four years old in April but I have the five year warranty.

When i worked at TPS i looked through vw technical documents as my 1.6 tdi need a clutch change / All 1.6 engines have a solid flywheel so that didn't need changing but it is recommended to change clutch fork with slider sleeve & pin, i replaced like for like LUK out & LUK back in mine had done approx 120k on the original clutch. so far I've done approx 5k on new clutch  :x

My car is still at the dealer.  Gave them a ring this morning and they said they will need to take the gearbox apart and car won't be ready until the New Year.  Am I eligible for a free courtesy car?

I would say yes, you are. Our DMF was replaced under warranty three days before the three year warranty ran out in October; the car had covered 29k. It took them 6 days days to replace, with the removal, inspection by tech from SUK and then rebuild, but it was backed onto a 20k service, MOT and another bit of warranty work so they had the car for 9 working days in total. We had a courtesy car throughout.
