BMW M2 - The M-pire Strikes Back

The main trouble (apart from the cost) is getting hold of one. The waiting list for new ones is huge, most dealers only seeing a maximum of 4 a year. perhaps those people won't be interested in a 2-3 year old model? the 1M hasn't lost any money several years on and it seems to have appreciated slightly, so I hope the M2 doesn't go the same way. Paying 'new' money for a secondhand car would hurt me too much, even if I could afford it.

  • Interested? Yes.   Can I afford one? Heck no! :p   It looks like a cracker, but I personally don't see it being a major success. I think potential customers may either:   Stump up more for an M4

Always amazed that the 1M has lost no value compared to M3's and M5's that both in some respect outclass the 1M!

I guess it's that 'special' thing that some cars just seem to have. It's why Top Trumps should not be used as a guide to buy a car :D

Very true. No doubt it's a special car. But like you said, paying new car money for a used one would be tough to swallow. But maybe that's because I'm a tight northerner! :D

I like the idea that if I can afford something a little bit special, I'd get it new and run it in properly, then treat it with respect. It worries me that a previous owner of something like an M2 might have revved it hard form cold and done doughnuts for his mates in the local Maccy D's car park :(

I am. It's on my list for the summer, along with the Alfa

This looks an interesting car.

Yes, it's a bit expensive at around 50% over a Focus RS (and more with options as Focus spec add ons quite limited) but it's in the next step up the ladder in terms of badge kudos, engine size and being rear wheel drive.

I would assume this will go head to head with the RS3 (capably but boring) and the A class AMG thing (fun and a bit less boring than the RS3).

With rear drive it would do well and the engine is good.

I just hope BMW don't over engineer it and leave some fun that people can tap into without needing to be at warp speed, in an effort to make it super capable in the hands of a buffoon.

I was speaking to a chap at work (he's a snooker players manager) that is getting one in April next year. It is the first M2 and one of only two coming to his local dealer (a Sytner in London somewhere) and the dealer isn't even going to get a Demo version. Shame they are so hard to get and slightly pricey. I would sooooooo love one :(

Have BMW given any plausible explanation for such a slow and low production quantity of the earliest M2's other than as a publicity / hype tactic to wet the appetite of those that will buy them and those that will just post on Social Media about them?

Any real reason why they do not just get them built in enough numbers and sold as BMW must be capable of doing that,

nothing that special about them is there ?

Williams Stockport are getting a demo, April time I believe

Taking a 2-Series shell off the main production line and onto a separate 'M' production line. So it will be slower, and is also a brand new full M model for them. Something that doesn't happen that often.

But there will also be a degree of supply and demand factored in as well :)

I'm so tempted to ask for a test drive (at least an afternoon of unaccompanied driving of course :) )

Actually Steve, if you get it for the morning and I get it for the afternoon we can go for a whole day playing around together (if you see what I mean :D)

I thought you'd never ask.... :p

Not sure if I believe the 2,000 units that Autocar report. If the car is as good as everyone hopes, then BMW would be almost certain to find a way to increase production. Mind you, if it's as good as expectation, the M3/4 would suffer in peoples expectations and even if it doesn't hurt their sales, BMW would not be happy with that.

What ever will be will be the future is not ours to see as Doris sang.

There are less than 4,000 M4 registered in the UK i think, so BMW will do what BMW do with the M2 if there are more cars in the UK than buyers and if they need register Management cars.

Of course if I ask Santa and I am good enough, then of course he will bring me one for Christmas.

C'mon Santa, please don't make me buy an A45

If Williams Stockport get one in I'm going to pop down and take a look, as it's my local dealer.

No chance of a test drive, they'll see right through me turning up in a 320d haha!

But a poke around one would be nice, as they do look fantastic in the press photos.

Mini-meet at Williams Stockport then!!!!!! We'll refuse to leave and will eat out all their buns unless we get a go :)

Here is an old thread with some pictures of their coffee and bun storage facility. Scroll down to post 20 something then also around 57 for pictures :)

I heard this start up and noises vid today. It sounds quite similar to my M135 on start up (I have the MPE) in that it has that loudish slightly flatulent 4 cylinder sound until the warm up valve opens and it sound like a 6 cylinder again. Seems to have no trouble running into the limiter :)

Well while we still wait to see if the M2 is as good as the Focus RS, BMW are releasing M performance parts already! options include (by the looks of it) a super loud exhaust and lots of pointless carbon type bits :D Unless the M2 is the true successor for the smaller, older M3s, then I might as well save up, sell a liver or two and buy the current M3/4 instead.
