New suspension ideas. ...

Featured Replies

I am looking at changing my suspension on my MK1 Octavia VRS.

I don't want a lowering kit as I have kids and a baby due in February. So am looking to get something 'standard' :-(

My suspension seems very flat and unresponsive. Are there any inexpensive sets out there?

Also, do people know if the VRS suspension is different from standard Octavia Suspension. As I don't wanna go standard if it different as I like the current ride height.

Hope that all makes sense lol

Octy vRS suspension is lower (shorter higher rate springs, stiffer FARB) than other Octys, and has different ARB pickups.

I'm not sure what you mean by "flat and unresponsive".

I never knew it said that :-/ lol

And oh. What's the most comfortable set up then?

If you want to keep the vRS ride height, but get a softer ride, you've got 2 options I think:-

  1. Koni dampers.
  2. Go from 17" to 16" wheels. You'll pretty much need to get VAG alloys to do that and clear the 312mm front discs, but 16" was standard on the vRS estate and gives you 10mm higher tyre walls which absorb road shocks a bit better.

Add a rear antiroll bar?

That will reputedly reduce understeer, but won't give a softer ride which is what the OP wants.

True, but I took his comment to mean he didn't want to go stiffer.

I just want to have decent ride comfort. It's horrific at the moment lol.

Your other option, presuming you want to keep the mid-range overtaking urge but will sacrifice a bit of ultimate cornering to get it would be to replace the vRS with a 130TDi model.

There isn't really any inexpensive options for what you want. Your best option would probably be a set of Koni FSD shocks mated to your standard springs. That will sharpen up your handling whilst improving comfort and retaining your current ride height. They'll cost around £500 or so though.

TBH that's not only the closest thing to what you want, but also the cheapest.

to be fair, your suspension must be around 15 years old if its original.

any standard suspension will make a big difference!  Bilstien b4's are nice on my tdi, which i will be selling soon as im breaking it - but might not fit the vrs!
