Thanks for all the positive feedback and reassurance about the DSG gearbox. I'm looking forward to taking delivery of my S3 combi now!

  • That moment when you first drive an auto and engage the clutch which is actually the brake and have to remove your lips from the windscreen. Priceless

  • I bought a 280. I think my brain dismisses the 'Eco' mode setting as a viable option.

  • So you have a manual car without clutch pedal.

So I'm just curious - does anyone regret opting for DSG over manual?

Im leaning more the other way. I ordered manual having never had an automatic but after reading more of this forum i wish i had ordered DSG. The ACC will work so much better with an automatic especially in slow moving traffic.

Im too late now anyway as my build week is this week (might even be nearly built)

No definitely not. Despite my comments I wouldn't be without it. I am comparing my experience with the Mercedes auto box against the Skoda.  The only time I drive a manual these days is when hiring a car!

Nonetheless it is useful sometimes such as in town traffic to have the option of tiptronic. It's a bit like the stop/start. It can become annoying, with the diesel engine, if in queuing traffic for too long so that gets switched off occassionally too.

I think the DSG is great and have it on the second hand Superb TSI I bought in December.  I have driven several automatics and have always found they have a bit of lag when I first accelerate.  I find it is the same on the Superb.  I do find though that if I need to get on to a roundabout quick, this makes me put a little more weight on the accelerator which always seems to result in wheel spin and me feeling a right numpty.  I have the 1.8 TSI.  Anyone else noticed wheel spin when you wouldn't necessarily expect it?  I haven't had the issue on previous autos but having said that I have gone from a Rover 75 with not a lot of power. I think it is likely me just needing to wait for a bigger gap but just in case ...

Nope I love the dsg. Don't have any lag. Usual routine if it's an island I want a quick entry and exit to is to drop into sport. 4wd certainly makes it much less of a drama ...
