Death of the car

Featured Replies

Today's WSJ has an article predicting the quadrupling of Tesla shares.

Seems they'r planning for the autonomous dial-up vehicle, specific to your current want/need.

Shopping trolley, ute, 4WD, sports, car you-name-it

To arrive at your location (at no stage driven by a mere human) and take you where you want for as long as ordered.

Figures already show a significant decline, amongst the young, to want to own a car.

When you think about it, with roads becoming saturated and parking becoming a significant burden (in the UK /Continent major U.S. cities and inevitably China) plus the expenses for them involved in procuring a home, it seems we are living in the dying days of freedom.

We are going to be referred to as 'flat-earthers' ......failing to keep up with technical advances.

We've certainly already had the best days.

Old days, that is.

Funny how often otherwise intelligent people seem to think everyone lives and works in cities and that everything is about cities and working from home or in an office.

I guess you mean the majority.......they'll deliver a tractor too, I guess........after all the already have auto pilot tech built in many.

I not going to be around long enough to qualify for the tag.

I think the most amazing motor vehicle things i have seen is film of Australian Mines and the remote control vehicles and engineers flying into service and maintain them.

For flood irrigation we use laser guided automatic levelling graders.

Auto guided headers etc.

'It' is creeping up on us.......Amazon 'drones' for parcel delivery..............

Passenger aircraft could have been flown without pilots IF they could convince the public they didn't need one.

The PR people were doing well on promoting Drones and then this happened and its all gone a bit crook today.

Set them back a bit on peoples faith in them.

Much to do......give 'em time.

Best all come to Scotland while you still can and have a wee drive in an internal combustion engine car, or an EV or what ever.

It'll be driven by an app on your smart phone - try and avoid Moscow when you mean Morrisons though.

when it is possible to buy a battery powered motorbike with a decent range then it might be worth looking at battery powered cars but until then its a minority sport for those with lots of money and a possibly misguided conscience :-)  I'll be waiting for afforable H fuel cells I reckon.

The 'fuel' is another matter.

If there's a 'graphene' breakout, who knows what's NOT possible.

North Yorkshire may not be quite in the same league as the roads you have up in Scotland but we've also go plenty of room to go out for a spirited drive.  While it is still possible to do so, I'll keep pouring unleaded petrol into my inefficient V6 and enjoy the roads that the Lord saw fit to bless us with up here. :) (Or down here depending on your location.)

I love your home area as well, and if Google / Amazon / Facebook or whoever is going to be providing the new transportation systems will collect me from home and take me down and around for some sporting driving i will be happy to accept that service.

Maybe just a days run out with a local Post Bus, Tesco / Asda Home Delivery driver would be as exciting as driving myself.

TESLA is not what most people would consider a genuine commercially viable entity, as soon as the subsidies dry up, it will vanish into the night.

Meanwhile, it's easy to spunk other people's money on irrelevant pipe dreams, and I'm sure everyone at the top is making a personal fortune too.

What subsidies are you talking about?

There's only £5k towards the purchase price which is neither here or there on a Tesla.

The boss of Tesla knows what the company has or has not received,

and he and others know what various Governments gave VWG to get green vehicles, Grants, Loans, subsidies and free hand outs and taxable benefits,

& the EU and others were conned and want money back.

The Boss of Tesla is correct in what he has recently said, that VW should be penalised by being made to build really Green vehicles and low emission vehicles, maybe even swap these to the owners of the vehicles that the purchaser was deceived into believing were green and low emissions.  (parphrasing there.)

Google to see what he said exactly.

Not the articles were it says he signed a letter saying 'Give VW a break' in the US,

don't waste money fixing the 'cheat' vehicles.

If manufacturers get Bilions to produce Green Diesel engine cars, what do they get in subsidies to come up with

EV's, and Diesel/EV Hybrids, and do they then spend it on R&D with the assistance of a Motorsport Programme.?

eg Porsche / Toyota and others.

Subsidies being removed and reduced on renewable electricity schemes and onshore wind farms and scrapping carbon capture schemes will be sure to slow down the UK meeting its targets on reducing pollution.

Future Electricity shortages mean that the Billions the UK Government have put into the Research, Design, Manufacturing, and promotion and grants, and the early stages of EV Charging Schemes can be another huge waste of money unless it goes all the way and more EV's are available at affordable prices and people that are running

& buying high polluters are going to be forced other to EV's.

Only one CCS scheme has been scrapped, but then it was the only one getting government money.

I'll agree to that, when and if Tesla start paying equivalent taxes on the manufacture of their implausibly large laptop batteries, and are honest about the carbons evolved in charging same.

In other news...

Its Christmas eve, so cheer up for 72hrs everyone!! Get maudling when hung over on the 28th :)

The ridiculous Internal Combustion Engine went nowhere either?.

Henry had other ideas.

Tesla haven't even started, in mass production terms, and they won't have the luxury of 'owning' the market either.

They predictably started with the 'aspirational' S Class and as setup costs are covered they'll move on to an A Class in time with no need for any subsidies.........more nuclear power stations though(?).

VW put a rocket under the EV and Google are determined to make mass transport safe and efficient.......what we have around us will soon be history.

I like to add - google arent trying to make mass transport safer, they are aiming to know whrre everyone is and what they are doimg at all times. How better than to control their movements.. big data is,as we knkw, big business, and google do it very very well.

It's 08.00 where you are.

For God's sake, go and open your pressies and CHEER UP

hardly when your major share holders are Merc' and Toyota  who have made more money from Tesla's shareprice than almost anyone else in Tesla

The first of the 'gigafactories' (acres of solar panel roof, run by Panasonic) in the Nevada desert near Reno, haven't come on line yet and another one is being planned for Germany.

Any subsidies will be transient.
