Knocking cat out

Featured Replies

Going to fit my miltek exhaust soon and wanting to decat the standard downpipe. I don't plan on cutting it out but was thinking of hitting the outside with a hammer a few times it might crumble and come out?

Anyone els done this?

It's got a mesh at each end so wouldn't just fall out, cut and weld is best

Ah right, didn't know about the mesh!

I won't be cutting it open and welding it back shut, to much hassle.

I was thinking of putting a long breaker bar that you use to take wheels off etc down the tube and hitting it a few times to see if that would smash it up.

I used a pry bar on a combo one

Yeah I've got plenty of them, was just thinking the power bar is longer and stronger.

How much effort did it take to come out with the pry bar then, work a success?

Not long, 4ft prybar and a hammer, thankfully openings in a combo cat are right at then end of cat

Will be a bit of a job on the fabia DP, as you can only access the CAT from one end to hit it.

Stolen from another members thread but a picture of the stock downpipe.

Hmm... Not sure what els I could use! I planned on getting two mash hammers and hitting opposite sides a few times to shatter it and hopefully it would all come out!

Can't see it happening tbh

There's a bloke on eBay flogging stock downpipes with the cat removed and a fake box welded on the pipe. Think they are about £80 IIRC (and of course if he is still selling them that is).

Can't find them now on eBay, sorry My post was no use what so ever! Lol

Don't want to spend any money on this really. I'd rather just buy a decat downpipe if it's going to cost money to take the cat out.

I've got huge drill bits (the ones that are 1.5m long) I could just drill it out.... Imagine doing that though... Would be great fun to watch!

In all honesty I don't know any really decent welded to weld it back up and be 100% it won't leak or look like it's been attacked with a shotgun.

I do have a spare downpipe to play with from my other vrs when I fitted a a full piper system.

Just smash it out it will take ages and be easier if you can strap it down to a bench or something. They are harder than you think .

I made a chain flail on a 10 mm rod so once there a big enough hole thru it i put the flail in the drill and keep spinning it in there to break it up.

Yeah, I have a vice to put it in.

So you think a pry bar will be enough to smash it out with? I've got plenty like I say, even a large bent one which would be handy I suppose!

I just don't want to damage it and cause problems blocking the backbox or anything if I can't get it all out and it breaks down into pieces once it's hot or anything

They are usually spot welded inside not too robust, probably not the same with diesels but tend to give bad resonances with decatted retaining stock bulge since its that size/shape for flow/surface area.

Dyno over reads a little bit this is definitely a smidgen over 230bhp mdx376 at 2.1 wait for it... Stock exhaust decatted, and stock air filter just bigger intake pipe.

Right, I'll just keep the standard downpipe I suppose.

It's only for a slightly better sound for when I fit the miltek really... So no big deal if the cat needs to stay. Power wise Depends what turbo I get but around 190bhp to 220bhp.
