Left Hand Drive cars in the UK

Featured Replies

Does any member drive a LHD car in the UK.  Does the Insurance cost more, What are they like for overtaking with the steering being on the left.

Just wondering

Spent many years with RHD in Spain. So same difference and TBH it is fine you tend to find yourself driving in the gutters a bit more than the others.

You just need to be more cautious for overtaking but nothing that you do not get used to, always handy having a passenger for pulling out around larger stationary objects.

A bit like if you park against the traffic in a row of parked cars and want to pull out, as the driver you cannot see oncoming traffic very well.

Insurance wasn't any different in Spain but no idea on UK.

the now ex's Yeti is LHD, never had a problem driving it TBH, Andy. In fact, motorway overtaking is slightly easier due the better sightline IYKWIM?

Single A roads are another matter though :peek: lol

I had an E30 M3 for several years that was only available in LHD (and driven LHD trucks over here and RHD on the continent)

Sit further back behind the car in front to give yourself a better view if you intend overtaking it (not an issue if you have a powerful car) likewise if they are in the middle of the road then looking down their inside (by driving closer to the curb) is a good trick, but still not as good as having a passenger looking for you.

Apart from overtaking there was no negatives IMO.

Not sure about the insurance issue as a RHD E30 M3 would have been a modified car so would no doubt incurred an extra premium?

Perfect,

i was looking at it and investing in a Suit and Chauffeurs Cap.

Maybe a Flag Stick & Flag on the front wing.

(Undecided or which Eastern European Flag to fly.)

This is my reason for asking, no leather though so obviously an import

Personally on a car like that (one that is freely available in the UK as RHD) I wouldn’t entertain LHD, mainly because it would be a bugger to sell on again.

It is also quite a basic spec... no park assist (rear sensors only) no MFSW, no leather. So closer to a UK spec SE.

Something special like an Integrale / M3 / Yank crap etc that were only available in LHD then it is worth the inconvenience of it being LHD and it will not put future buyers off.

^^^^Tend to agree with Gizmo68...cannot give away RHD in Spain on normal cars so similar would apply here I assume.

Majority of the people buying LHD in the UK is to take them abroad.

A lot of time driving LHD in UK and RHD elsewhere personally. It can be compensated for, but only to a point. A twisty country lane and you have no way to make up for what ultimately is a reduced view of the road ahead at times and can rob yourself if doing so by choice of some of those moments where you would have more time to react to a bell end. Not to be put off by that, more to be fully aware prior.

As mentioned LHD value in the UK for a general vehicle is substantially lower. EPIC Superb though :o

forgot to mention; the ex had a MkV Golf before the Yeti. We looked into selling it here to a LHD specialist but we were offered a silly low price so off to Deutschland it went where we got a lot closer to what it was worth.
