Budget tyre conundrum

Featured Replies

Hi guys. I have recently taken delivery of my 62 plate Octavia vrs TDI in race blue metallic. I have noticed that I have 3 falken ze914 tyres fitted and 1 arrowspeed n1000 on one of the drivers side rear. Checked the manufacturer dates and all were changed this year. The dealer confirmed that they put the 3 falkens on as part of the cars service before I took delivery.

My question is do I change the arrowspeed as soon as possible for a matching falken, or wait till it needs replaced.

I know there are lots of views on this topic, so any comments greatly appreciated

Thanks.

If it were down to me I'd wait till there all worn down and match the set with the spare.

Ive got a set of Michlain's on the car an a set of hancooks on the work car. The work car will be going on the work car when they wear out.

It's always best to have the same make of tyre on all 4 corners of your vehicle to get consistent handling. Especially important if you like to corner at speed with confidence. Mind you, I have in the past had 2 different tyres on the front to the ones on the rear, but I would certainly avoid different tyres on the same axle. By the way, congratulations on your excellent choice of vehicle.

personally I would like 2 fronts that matched and 2 rears that matched...

+1  but what the hell is arrowspeed??  chinese suicide tyre?   I would scrap it first or keep it as a emergency only spare

Get another Falken to replace the Arrowspeed.

Different tyres front to back is OK but I too would prefer the same tyre on each axle.

I assume the Falkens are brand new? If so now is the time to do it as the treads will be even on all four tyres.

Stick the Arrowspeed on eBay, you'll get a few quid for it.

The arrowspeed/Nexens dont get too bad reviews. They are made by Goodyear as a budget tyre. I think as above maybe a good time to get another Falken to keep them all the same

One more matching falken will do the trick by the sounds of it.

Arrowspeed is a kwik-fit brand budged tyre, slightly worse than their ceat range.

Keep the arrowspeed as a spare? Slim chance as I don't even have a spare wheel, let alone an 18 inch one. Asked dealer to order me one. Tried to tell me it would be 170. I told him to bolt if that's the case and I will take my 100 deposit back. He then offered to give it to me cost price. Will hopefully get it in the new year along with the spare key they ordered as it was missing when they got the car.

There are a lot worse tyres they could have fitted than Falkens!

I put a couple of Nexens on my estate a couple of months ago, seem good enough for what I need.

Mike

Mike vrstdi comment was in relation to the arrowspeed that the dealers didn't change as it has plenty of legal life. I think I will look for a matching falken to go with the other 3.

Nexan CP641 all round for me in excess of 25000 miles and still above 4 mm tread good all round tyres for the money.

Get a matching Falken and see how things go, Should be good enough unless you are brand conscious.

Halfords auto centres do some good deals on Falken ZE914s. I had 4 fitted to our Fabia Estate (205/45/16) for £254. About the cheapest I could get at the time.

They are reasonable tyres; just don't get too heavy on the throttle with steering lock on!

Traction control should help keep the car in check doing that manoeuvre.

I am not brand conscious per se. But I have used budget tyres on much less powerful and lighter cars in the past and lucky if I got 6 months 6k out of them. They were fitted as a pair. My main concern is a budget and mid range on the same axel. They also have different speed ratings.

Does anyone know what the correct speed rating for my cars tyres should be.

Indeed. Personally I prefer a feathered throttle so not to get the power switching in and out ending in axle tramp.

I would want the same brand on axle and prefer same all round if I can.

I believe it's 92Y

That's what I thought. I will be having an argument with the dealers then. As the Falken they put on are 92w. The code in my book is h7d which I found out is 225/40 r18 92y. Therefore it should have Y rated tyres back on it, don't fancy invalidating my insurance.

You're joking aren't you? Struggling to get 6k out of a set of tyres? Just how heavy is your right foot?

As said, I've just bought a couple of Nexens, but years ago I bought a couple of real budgets for my 54 plate. 25k later they are still on the rear of the car -- can't comment on time, because they are summers and come off during winter.

-- both my Octys are Elegance spec, with the same 16 inch alloy wheels, and the 54 plate was originally specced with W rated tyres, whereas the 08 plate had V rated from the factory.

Mike

My right foot is not that heavy. It was a few years ago when I had the budget tyres that didn't last. I literally had to change them after 6 months on the front. Lucky if I did 13k a year back then in 1.4 Renault megane.

I will have a look in the boot floor. But code in book is in my post above - h7d

I will contact the dealer again but when I mentioned it yesterday they didn't seem to interested. Their reply was "we are not allowed to put tyres on that are unsafe. Y rating is good for 168 which your car and even the new one won't reach, so w is fine as it's rated at 155 which is less than your car can do"

Does anyone know the contact details for skoda UK, as technically the garage have invalidated my warranty by putting tyres on the car which are a lower speed rating than the manufacturer specifications.

Don't you have speed cameras every ½ mile, so going over 70 is not an option?

I am well aware that the UK speed limit on a motorway is 70mph. The point is that the manufacturer has specified a tyre speed rating for each of their vehicles and legally you should replace with equivalent or better. You can't put a tyre with a lesser speed rating than was specified regardless of whether you can reach the tyres limits or not.
