Amundsen having trouble with iTunes via SD1

Featured Replies

Hello folks

I got a 64gb SD card from Santa, so copied my iTunes on to it.  It works, but is having trouble with what appears to be quite a lot of the tracks.

Had a rummage and it appeared to tally up that it doesn't like m4a and m4p (Mp4) files.  So I set about creating duplicates of all my tracks, as mp3's, which I've managed after a couple of hiccups where it'd stall on one file and instead of starting at the point in time where it left off t went back to the beginning and started duplicating them again.  I ended up with three mp3's of my first track at one point.

Anyhoos, some time later I now have an SD card with 1300 or so mp3 files, and tempting fate, thought 'job's a good 'un'.  Except it isn't.

Although it appears to be able to see far more tracks than before, a lot are still coming up as 'error' files (they seem okay on the mac).  Does anyone have any bright ideas please?  I can at least stick it on shuffle, which seems to work, but selecting anything from the scrolling menu is very hit and miss  :|

If the answer's on here, I'm afraid it's eluding me.

TIA

So, yesterday I had an epiphany and decided I didn't like the haphazard way of finding tracks, so decided to tidy up the SD card.  One of the things that irked me was having a track title of:

'10 Love song for a vampire.mp3', as the track number obviously affects finding tracks alphabetically.  So I decided to set about changing them to 'Love song for a vampire.mp3'.

After a bit of searching, I decided there was no real quick fix that I was happy with, so I settled down for a few hours and changed them all manually, removing duplicates and those pesky m4a files that I'd not spotted before.  I emerged, finally, triumphant in my quest and with an SD card with only mp3 files, in perfect alphabetical order.

I've just popped out to enjoy the fruits of my labours, popped the SD card in, but....what's this?? the first track it's played is not the first one (19-2000 by the Gorillaz) but it's 'Millionaires' by the Script.  And worse, it's '10 Millionaires', as an m4a file!

On more investigation, it turns out it won't play any of the tracks I've changed.  At all.

And what I really don't understand is it can find all the previous files (perhaps a blessing in disguise) that, so far as I'm aware, are not even on the SD card any more.

This is really bizarre.  Does the Amundsen upload from the SD Card? How come it's finding tracks I've deleted?

Anyone know what's going on?

IIR deleting files does not remove them from the media.

If it were me I would save the contents of the card to your hard drive, reformat the card and then reload the tracks back onto the card. Then see what happens.

Also, it should be OK with m4a files as these are AAC. Even older VAG infotainment heads can read these.

Thanks Don - I'd obviously jumped to a (wrong) conclusion that a dozen or so m4a files failing in a row was a sign they were all duff.

Must admit I haven't tried formatting the card, which I suppose is the rather logical next step.  I'll give that a go.

What I am finding is that it seems able to read all the file formats, but just not all of any of them.  I'm contemplating trying to put all the music into windows files to see what that does (It's all currently on a MacBook Pro) and if it makes a difference.

I was going to post a similar thread. My 2015 Amundsen+ does similar and you can see it skip/flash through sometimes half a dozen tracks before it finds one it can play.

Its really frustrating.

I've attached a snippet from my manual. Maybe its file length or something equally mundane?

Actually its probably the copy protection - have you noticed a pattern, e.g. is it Apple Music songs that don't play, or CD uploads etc?

You say you are using a 64 GB card. I have only used max 32 GB as specified in both vehicle manuals, Bolero and Columbus units.

I doubt the Macbook makes a difference but I am a PC user only.

If I can amend /update my replies.

Sorry but my RNS 510 (Columbus) does not play AAC files created in itunes. The manual says it should.

The same AAC tracks converted to MP3 using iTunes are fine.

I failed to realise/remember that when converting the AAC to MP3 they are saved into the same folder and the SDHC card I was using did not have the AAC tracks removed. Just tried playing them and nowt.

I have been experimenting today.

I connected my old iTouch to the mdi input (RNS 510) and it played for a while then when I tried to select tracks it stopped.

Most, if not all, are AAC format.

More experimenting in progress.

OK I now have only 2 albums on my iTouch, both with MP3 (MPEG Audio) only and the MDI link to my RNS 510 does not see them.

I have another MDI to iTouch cable and I have an MDI to USB cable which I will try via a SDHC/USB adapter...tomorrow.

I now have all 1500+ tracks from iTunes converted to MP3 and saved to SDHC which I will also be trying tomorrow.

It's footy time now.

Though this is not your unit but mine (the software will be very similar) it's well worth a read. It opened my eyes to my, similar, problem with the MDi input.

Not given a thought to the 64 Gb SD card being too big

The Script album was uploaded from a CD to iTunes.  Converted to mp3 and it won't play any of them.  Left as m4a files and all is well  :wonder:

Will be interesting to see what happens with your 1500 mp3's Don.

It's beer time now

It's the lack of an apparent pattern that's mystifying me.  Downloaded singles from iTunes appear to be fine.

What'd be helpful would be that little extra text after 'error file' that says 'mp3 file not supported' or something helpful.

I have just purchased my Passat which has the 510 fitted. The seller said he had only ever used it set on Radio 4 in 3 years of ownership from new and that he had never used the DVD or SD slot. He did say his wife used to plug her iPhone into the MDI to play music but with no mention of whether it played OK or not.

I have been using the SD slot with a 32 GB MyMemory SDHC card without issues. This said the card contained both m4a and MP3 files some duplicated and some not so I did/do not know which type was playing. In the week I have used it, it has showed no errors. I have now removed all the m4a files in favour of just MP3. Tomorrow will tell.

Looking at the 64GB SD cards on the MyMemory web, where all are SDXC type, it states

Not all digital devices are compatible with SDXC cards. If your device is not compatible with this type of card, your storage will be limited. Please ensure you check the compatibility of your device before purchasing an SDXC card.

This may also affect their use for music files. What is your 64 card type.

The DVD drive works very well with a DVD I ripped myself of a music gig...Gerry Rafferty Remembered.

More tomorrow.

Ohh yes, ref the SD card, all tracks are in their artist folder in the root directory.

OK some more data,

1. 32GB SDHC card reformated (FAT32) and loaded with 1500+ MP3 tracks only. Plays when in SD card slot and connected via MDI/USB interface lead.

2. iTouch 8GB loaded with 2 albums all tracks MP3. Plays when connected to the MDI/Apple (30pin) interface lead, but only immediately after connecting it. Select another source and then try to get back to the MDI and it's flakey.

3. iPod 30GB loaded with tracks of various types, MP3, AAC etc. Plays when connected to the MDI/Apple (30 pin) interface lead but only the MP3 tracks. Again it plays only immediately after connection. Select another source and then try to get back to the MDI and it's flakey.

I also used a second MDI/Apple interface cable and it produced the same results so the cables are good.

At the moment with these results, make sure you ONLY have MP3 tracks on the media and stick to 32GB and below media.

I also tried using the AUX in 3mm socket in the arm rest but the head unit would not see the iPod. According to the manual it should as long as there is nowt attached to the MDI socket which there was not.

Update: 1900 MP3 tracks loaded onto the HDD. It took 1 1/2 hours following which I randomly selected tracks and all played without issues.

So I conclude,

1. Only use 32GB SD or SDHC memory cards MAX capacity. As specified in the 510 manual

2. Only load MP3 files. As specified in the manual. I have not tried WMA files but I think they will be good.

3. Keep file levels to a minimum. Manual states 8 but I would go much less. Mine are only 2 level.

This should be firm practice for the Amundsen because its software will be much the same.
