ABS, TCS, TPM lights - hubs diagnosed, £570?

Hi all,

 

Not been on here in a while as life's been quite busy...

 

I've searched a little but didn't get what I wanted as the last post on the subject was early last year.

 

Anyway, my VRS TDi is less than 4 years old. Granted, it's done 93,000 miles now but probably 80% of that has been motorway work.

 

The above lights started coming on very occasionally a few months ago, then cleared themselves. In December, it started as almost permanent, car was coming up to a service so I took it in.

 

They diagnosed it as being the speed sensor rings (both fronts showing a fault) and would need new hubs at £570 all in!

 

EH???

 

From some of the searches, it would appear that a corroding ring (fnaar, fnaar) can indeed necessitate a replacement hub...

 

Who designed a system as **** as that???

 

Anyway, picked up the car having successfully avoided swearing at the dealership, I'm now debating how to proceed, I'm furious that a VAG car can need anything serious replacing at less than 4 years old - that's NOT wear & tear! Bearing in mind my car has full Main Dealer Service History, does not do short journeys, doesn't get driven hard (that's what my M3 is for), and spends most of it's life cruising around 79mph up and down the A1...

 

Has anyone had any success chasing some form of goodwill from Skoda on this issue, or am I going to have to suck it up and bend over? :moon:

 

Has anyone had any luck clearing the corrosion from the rings?

Are the ABS rings no longer on the CV joints then?

Try good will from Skoda. Got nothing to lose. Get a quote from an independent as well.

I believe a colleagues son had this on s Fabia. The garage gave them a good clean first before swapping anything. That was 6mths ago and all is well. They didn't even charge him. (Main dealer, 03 plate basic estate!)

Ring or email Skoda UK and ask them to open a case...

This will be a good test of Skoda's goodwill policy, the car is out of warranty but historically they have been quite generous with cars that are out of warranty but have full main dealer service history. Given the recent success of the Skoda brand here in the UK it is rumoured that their generosity isn't what it used to be.

 

If they say no then you need no further reason to walk away from your expensive main dealer loyalty.

 

Finding a good independent garage will see the main dealer price of £570 drop quite considerably.

Suck it up and bend over according to your own words. The car has done 90K+ miles and is out of warranty, which isn't covered anyway due to corrosion. It might be a design fault, it's exposed to the elements. I should know the same happened to me at around the 6th year of MkII ownership and cost about £450 to replace one hub.

I'll compose an email tonight, thanks for the replies chaps.

It's just disappointing at less than 4 years old, corrosion is an issue.

For perspective, my M3 is 11 years old and is only now exhibiting small spots on the off wing and sill - still covered under their 12 Yr anti corrosion warranty. No issues with any driveline components!

Parking sensors failing, control unit failure have also occurred in the last couple of weeks too.

I bought the VRS on the reliability of my 2001 Octavia estate, when I sold that in 2012, it'd done 140,000 miles and other than consumables, only needed a MAF sensor, EGR valve clean and a wiper linkage.

I'll see what they say but I fear this will be my last Skoda.

It's a rubbish design fault i'm afraid and a non serviceable part. I had the same fault on my car (speed sensor rings corroded) and I had the VW specialist change both REAR hubs on my Mk5 golf GT sport at a cost of £350 (inc the £39 diag fee). Very expensive, but I called round four or five garages and the quotes were similar. I think I could get it about £30 cheaper from another garage. 

 

I do remember the main dealer quote being very pricey though, so it's probably worth taking the car away and work done elsewhere...

 

Fingers crossed I won't get the same fault come up on my Octy!!! I couldn't stomach it twice..

It's the age thing I'm ****ed off about, less than 4 years old!

If they're that bad they're almost a service item, they shouldn't be attached to a big expensive item!

Cheap recycled metal with not a drop of grease anywhere. See a lot of Bmws with this issue but it's the cv joints that rust and ruin the abs sensor's. Ever thought of changing them yourself. Quite an easy job on yours to do.
