280, now 290 PS

Featured Replies

So, how come Seat are allowed to give their halo 2.0 car 280 and now 290 PS and we're capped at 226 bhp or 230 PS?

I have both a vRS (mk2) at 197 bhp and a Scout (mk 2) at 158 bhp, and would love a little more power as stock for my next Octy.

Why are Skoda held back whilst Seat are free to ramp it up?

Thoughts please guys!

Cheers,

Dunc

Seat is the less rich mans sporty brand

Skoda the sensible shoes brand

Yep, SEAT = Sporty, Skoda = Family.

Of course, the Superb 3 has the 280 engine. Any chance the Octy 3 will get it as a special edition?

probably something to do with the big wigs a VW HO getting scared if they allowed Skoda to put the 280 engine in the Octavia that no one would buy the Golf GTI (all versions) considering Skoda is seen as a 'less' premium brand and so sell cars £3-£4k cheaper.

I think that argument / thinking was valid when only Audi had the more powerful engines, and then also when VW ramped up the Golf, but I thought Seat was below Skoda in the parts pecking order?

I think a more powerful Octy vRS (even one with 4WD) would sell very well, but is perhaps still a different market from VW due to the much larger size of the Octy boot.

I'm very tempted to map my petrol Scout to about 200bhp. Then it would be all the car I need, particularly as my vRS estate has been adopted as the family car for the school run by Mrs Dunc - she loves the power & the DSG.

because VW are bunch of scared idiots.

Skoda Motorsport is tech leader for VW but when it comes to RS...tragedy and disgrace of Skoda Motorsport. Especially what happened in WRC.

It is lobby. Skoda is the only one who makes money in VAG and VW/AUdi/VW needs to sell their sport cars

Had a look at an Octavia Vrs 280 estate yesterday at DM Keith's in Hull. Mmm...

What? Do you mean Superb 280? If there's an Octavia VRS 280 I am very interested.

Do you think there are similar threads on the SEAT forums?

"So, how come SKODA are allowed to give their halo 2.0 car 610 litres of boot space and we're capped at 587 litres?

Why are SEAT held back whilst Skoda get all the space?"

The design of the car, including how much space it has, is a different issue. This is surely about which engine each 'brand' is allowed to use?

Mrs Old Newbie also loves the power & performance of her FL petrol DSG Octy, especially after the re-map........... So do I, when I'm allowed to drive it!

Just VAG branding strategy. Hard to see around it but they must have their reasons. Probably they dont think a 280/290ps Octavia would be profitable enough or would create too much choice/infighting between the marques affecting R, Cupra and S3 sales.

It all used to be so different when skoda needed a wrc car they had to make the mk1 octavia 1.8t 4x4 truly one of the best cars I have ever owned and most understated cars

Hey you guys, head in shame, it was as rob_e says, a 230. Can only say on my defence 'should have gone to spec savers' !!!!

I was so impressed by the look of it, in Candy White with black alloys - looked ALMOST as good as my Yeti!

If Skoda UK put a VRS 4x4 with a petrol 280 engine for sale for a sensible price I would buy one tomorrow. I have thought about the Superb, but I don't need all that real estate.

The Superb hatch isn't so much larger than an Octavia hatch, 4861 mm long compared to 4659 mm & 2031 mm wide, against 2017 mm.

The 220 ps DSG Superb hatch weighs in at 1430 kg, the 220 ps DSG Octavia hatch = 1365 kg.

'Tis a bigger car but it doesn't feel like it in normal driving, unlike the Mk 5 Mondeo which seems to be a bit of a barge.

I think I'd be standing just behind you in the queue... :D
