AVG has always had issues. Poor detection rates has plagued them and infected a number of machines of friends and families over the years that I advise anyone asking to avoid them like the plague.

A machine I had years ago which AVG free claimed was free had 2 major trojans when I switched to mcafee.

I don't rate MSE either for similar reasons. I prefer paying for the backup of a big Corp and currently have Norton with their infection removal service/guarantee.

I use Kaspersky because it is free if you bank with Barclays but I guess that any anti virus is only as good as its last update and none are perfect.

Never touch Norton again since it wrecked my brother in laws PC a few years back. I use spybot, malwarebytes, spyware blaster and avast with no issues.

What did Norton do?

I used to work for PCWorld as a "tech guy" and the number of machines messed up by AV of all types was unbelievable. Mainly from people leaving trials on and installing other AV or once the AV sub had run out.

Norton had a real issue with messing up computers but they got much better over the years, plus I think we saw much more Norton than others as most machines were shipped with it. The Norton removal tool fixes a lot of issues.

Personally I don't use any AV however my laptop is a OSX with noscript, Adblock plus, ghostery etc and all my software is legit, I do have some Windows server 2012r2/2016 machines but I don't see them as high risk as the 2012r2 is a hyperv machine supporting *nix vms and the 2016 box is used to testing OS installs etc via virtualbox.

What did Norton do?

Stopped his PC from booting after an update, the phone support people really didn't help the situation and probably caused the main damage.

Once upon a time I used and recommended AVG (Free) but over the years it has been filled with bloatware and annoying pop-up ads. For the last year I've been running BitDefender (Free). No hassle, lightweigh, no annoying messages. Plus that BitDefender comes out well in tests.

I remember Norton used to grind my old pooters into the dust as the poor little chips struggled with the extra load. Nowadays I still use Norton and find it doesn't impact on my 'workflow' in any real noticeable way. I'm a big fan of it and so far have never had a Virus, Trojan or any similar thing that I know about, whilst running it :)

Only time i ever had to deal with a serious trojan problem it was on one of dads office pc's and it had norton- fully up to date etc.. took an age, but i sorted it by getting mbam installed via safe mode and running that to get the trojan outa the way. But then norton shat itself so had to go back into safe mode dump norton via ccleaner. Imstalled avg which found more crap norton missed and eventually had everything runing as twas.. ive never trusted norton since.

prior to that i had been a mcafee user, until it started getting to miss stuff despite being up to date.

I haven't bothered installing any anti virus programs for years now (apart from when you had to manually install the Microsoft one).

Just leave Windows 10 to do it's thing and I've never had any problems. I'm also careful what gets clicked on and downloaded which I'm sure is where most people go wrong when they get viruses etc.

Been using McAfee for a while now since it comes free with my broadband. Wouldn't have been my choise other wise.

TBH I've not seen a virus or malware on my PC for years. I run a similar set of ad and script blockers as GullyG. Avoiding installing shoite also is quite effective.

I've been running a fully licensed machine with no warez for a long time now. Still makes me feel a bit dirty.
