O6 1.9tdi diesel fumes in the car

Featured Replies

Hi all I've owned my car about a fortnight. Great car with only 65,000miles but every now and again I swear I smell very faintly diesel fumes. Also the egr is leaking black goo which is gonna get replaced after the holidays. But just tonight the engine check light came on.

So assuming it's the egr causing the check light would replacement take the light out or need a code reader to clear it. Has anyone had the same issues please

The engine check light will have to be turned off with VAGCOM. The EGR won't be turning the engine light on though, the most likely cause of the engine light being on is the MAF (Mass Air Flow) which will be dirty due to the EGR being faulty. The MAF sensor will just need cleaning with an electrical switch cleaner.

I'd hazard a guess that the fumes you're smelling in the car are due to your injector seals being knackered.

The fuel lines are prone to chaffing and so could be leaking, use your nose under the bonnet to locate source.

It's not unknown to track someone's diesel spill at the filling station on the soles of your footwear, slippery pedals is a sure sign.

Thanks for your replies... Tbh under the bonnet it's all smells fine...what sort of prices are vagcom stuff as both me and my brother have octavia's and other work colleagues so may be worth chucking in a few quid each

If the EGR isn't working it could well flag a fault and an EML.

If the injector seals are leaking you won't smell anything, they are inside the cylinder head. I'd check the EGR pipe work, the flexible pipes are very prone to cracking.

Thanks all...I'll see what I find when I change the egr and take it from there I guess

tandem fuel pump leaking?

By diesel fumes I assumed he meant exhaust fumes rather than the smell of diesel fuel.
