With regards to turbo choice, please make sure you're clear on what power you're looking for. Also make sure to ask yourself the question 'will I be happy to keep it at that power?'.

 

I've wasted so much money on my car going up through the ranks of setups over the years I've had it. My advice would be to get someone to take you out in a hybrid equipped car. Then get Kev to take you out in his GTB'd car. The difference is massive. Yes ok, they're more difficult to fit. However, if you're inclined to think that 200bhp isn't going to be enough long-term, then plump the extra cash into it now and go GTB from the off.

 

Also consider that clutches are hit and miss with both a PD150 setup and GTB. So you may need to replace for either car. Obviously suspension and 312mm brake upgrades are definitely advised!

Yea.. since posting this and settling on a turbo. I have read through many project threads and turbo threads, and realised that if I'm gonna spend £600-700.. there's no point in 6 months time wanting more and then having to fork out another £800+..

I wouldn't want to chase massive figures.. and 190 would be my initial target..

What turbo would be recommended to handle 220-230 comfortably?

That budget doesn't stand a chance, you're completely standard so you're starting from scratch; new turbo, FMIC, remap and clutch will take you way over that, plus your handling needs sorting urgently.

 

It's not about power rather what you can do with it that counts, spend the money on a good remap and a decent handling setup first, if the standard turbo pops then you can think about what you do from there.

312 kit is next on my shopping list, but I'm conscious that my turbo is getting more siren like and therefore would like to fix one in mind.

In that case I believe a GTB running a soft map at 230 is about as good as it gets, you'll still eat the clutch alive but pretty much anything at 230 will anyway.

I have to say that clutches are pot luck with these cars. Mine lasted for 80k standard, 12k remapped, 20k 220bhp and about 12k 270bhp, all with torque figures to match. I took it out after that, but it still had loads of meat left on it! Yet I've seen others who have had a remap only and had slipping.

Your best bet for a reliable 220bhp is without doubt a GTB1756vk. Fantastic turbo with quick spool. Yet far far better to drive than a PD150 hybrid. They retain good low down power whilst delivering far stronger performance above 3k rpm than a hybrid. Makes the car much more fun to drive.

It's not a straight forward switch like a hybrid though. Some custom pipework, oil return and exhaust modifications are required to fit. Plus stop screw and actuator tweaks probably required. Not too bad really though.

On another note, you're a lucky sod having a wife who buys you stuff like that!!

You'll need over 2bar of boost to get 230bhp. With that in mine I would go gtb1756vk. Failing that a turbo dynamics gt hybrid but check to see if they will warranty it at that boost.

I won't be touching the Turbo I don't think.. I'm scared of naffing it up. Especially when it's not just bolt on!

I know it's hit and miss with the clutch and DMF, but that's gonna happen like you say - whether it's just remapped or whether I start with performance mods - or it might not. Nature of the beast.

Ah the wife.. she has her uses! I have a feeling she won't be helping out like that again.. I didn't mention price till I was about to checkout
