Turbo & Exhaust advice!

Featured Replies

How's it going guys!

Well.. I'm conscious that my turbo is getting noisier and noisier! And I would rather strap a new one before the old one decides to do something interesting.. :-)

She's completely standard at the minute, and I'm not after huge gains.. the 180bhp/200 region would be ideal, and a map conservative to the standard clutch.

Am I better off getting a hybrid PD150, or would something like this be okay? http://www.darksidedevelopments.co.uk/products/garrett-gt1749vb-turbocharger-for-1-9-tdi-seat-ibiza-cupra-pd160.html

I'm a complete amateur but enthusiastic about learning - so it's a bit of a mind field all the options.. and the search function doesn't help me. It just confuses me even more!

I'm aware that she will need to breath better, and have earmarked an airtec FMIC for that job!

With regards to that.. will the new turbo require a modification to the exhaust system at the same time of fitment or within the immediate future?

I'm not good enough to be doing the work myself, so she will be venturing into a garage for the work. But I want to get in my mind what I need to do!

Thanks for the advice! Just want to settle on a turbo!

No need to touch the exhaust system, either turbo would be fine for what you want, the quality of the remap is more important if you don't want to kill your clutch.

I recommend the pd150/160 units. Good for 190-195bhp.

I fitted a Garrett GT1749VB (PD160) to the wife's Fabia SE (BLT) a few months ago, it too was supplied by Darkside.

It's pretty much a straight like for like fit except It required clocking (very easy to do) and also the EGR cooler will not fit, so required an EGR delete kit and coolant pipe kit which Darkside also supplied.

Custom remapped it's now at 195bhp @ 3700rpm and 410Nm @ 2200rpm, it could have produced more but was held back to protect the otherwise standard drive train.

My wife's not into modifying cars, she says its waste of money and cars are only to get from A to B, but after she came back from here first drive out in the car after the remap she was grinding from ear to ear and said she wished we had changed the turbo years ago !

Thanks for all your input guys.. really appreciated.

With regards to exhaust modifications - is that all about looks over functionality.. or are the exhaust modifications more so for higher power?

I would love to have a go at getting to it myself but haven't the confidence! So I'll leave it to the garage :-)

exhausts are not real power gains. i got a pipper cat back o silencer on mine but i like abit more noise. i guess there will be a point the normal exhaust starts to restrict power but for your goal it should be fine. i would spend the money on TT brakes to take the extra speed.

The 312 breaks upgrade is getting booked in this month along with a couple of other niggles before the Turbo gets replaced..

The wife has bought me a Bilstein B12 kit for our wedding anniversary as well.. but it's not our anniversary yet, and I haven't spotted it anywhere - so I presume it hasn't been bought yet :-)

Right!

Final question with regards to the FMIC and bumper modifications. I like both the widemouth and the smoothed bumper.

Is the widemouth better for the Intercooler temperature - as I would presume it is. Is the smoothed bumper an option - or will it restrict it?

I'm not fussed on either option really! Just wanted to know.

Depend on FMIC used and whether you muller the crash bar.

In my opinion the widemouth wont be required for the power you want. Im running a hybrid pd150 at 1.85bar boost (about 220hp) with an airtec and my mapper was saying the intake temps were staying very low on hard runs. Find faboka on here and ask him for a quote on mapping. He did a great job on mine

Cheers for that.

I've given Faboka a PM and will go from there.

Thanks everyone for your help!

If your getting an airtec just get a seat sport crash bar and cut the ends off. I got mine for £25 posted

Sorry to jump into your topic, but I'd like some info regarding fitting PD150 turbo to my vrs SE.

What else do I need apart from the turbo to supply to the mechanic?  Is the oil feed pipe same for PD130 and 150? Any link please to the correct one?

Can I get away with removing the EGR cooler bits, but keeping the blanked off EGR valve in place? (been mapped out already). I've got the Darkside EGR cooler blanking hose kit and 2 blanking plates (1 on exh. manifold and 1 on EGR.

Many thanks guys

Everything is the same ie; Oil feed, oil drain, exhaust down pipe, turbo outlet, etc, etc.

Its just the EGR flange on the exhaust manifold is at the wrong angle for a BLT engine.

You could keep the EGR valve and use a blanking plate if you wish, but if your going to the expense of changing the turbo (1K +), for what extra it costs I would recommend spend a little more and replace the EGR. I cant comment on the quality of other EGR delete kits but the Darkside kit is very good.

Cheers. To be honest the EGR is disabled and I'd like to keep it there so it visually looks like everything is in place in case MOT tester wants to look under the bonnet. I don't see a massive benefit of having the EGR delete fitted...

Remember to get a new exhaust manifold gasket. And an oil change if it has not had one very recently.

I'm assuming this is off of a Mk4 Ibiza? A very good shout if so as I'm not especially happy with the chopped up bar on my Fab!

So the Airtec fmic fits snug behind a seat sport crash bar then does it?

I assume the crash bar bolts on the same as the Fabia's?

Thanks in advance.

JRJG

Loads of space between the cooler and the crash bar, it's to save you having to cut up the original bar. Yeah uses the same bolt holes.

No worries if you want any pictures I can take some at the weekend.

You just have to cut on a mounting lug on either side then it bolts straight up
