Replacing stock front speakers in Octavia mk1 Help!

Featured Replies

Hello everyone, im new here and first off i want to wish all of you a happy new year!

I recently bought my frist Skoda Octavia mk1 (99) and wish to upgrade my front speakers (door and tweeter). I am not using any amp for now.

I have bought this http://www.amazon.com/Alpine-SXE-1750S-6-5-Inch-Component-Speakers/dp/B007MTNBSK
I also have a Kenwood KDC-4651U aftermarket HU in my car

As you can see I discovered that there was 4 wires connected to the stock speakers with to connectors and it seems that the new speaker only needs 2 wires.

How should i wire this? Or is there any adaptors that will work?

Also im not sure how to connect the tweeters either, it looks like this:

I appreciate any help that i can get, and i am a beginner to this :-)

Two of the wires go up to the tweeter.

Have you checked if those speakers fit. The standard ones are very shallow for a reason.

So one of the "connectors" with the brown and blue wires goes from the speaker to the tweeter?

Yes they fit perfectly, exact same size and depth as the stock ones.

Yep, doesn't the original speaker have a sort of bypass connector for the tweeter. I disconnected the tweeter as when I replaced the big speaker as it wasn't a component so I didn't need the extra tweeter.

The piece of metal you can see in the first photo is particularly unhelpfully positioned when fitting different speakers.

Yep, this is how the original speakers look like:

So the big speaker "powers" the tweeter through the bypass?

Would it work to just pair the brown and blue wires together and connect them to the big speaker? and then connect the tweeter?

I think the tweeter connector just piggybacks on the main speaker. Just connecting the wires should work fine.

I'm afraid I don't. I don't have a mkI anymore.

Ok so i paired the two brown wires together and same with blue wires. Connected them to the big speaker in the door and it was working. But when i tried to connect the tweeter im just getting a low buzzing sound, i can kinda hear the music but just really really low. Thought maybe i had mixed up the positive/negative, but when i  switched it only got worse.

Anyone have any idea what is wrong with the tweeter? I am basically running one wire from the stereo to both the tweeter and woofer in door.

You need the crossover capacitor on the tweeter, or a separate crossover network otherwise you are overloading the tweeter.

Do not leave it connected without one of these as the tweeter is very easy to blow up.

Alright, the speakers didnt come with any crossover. There is a tiny "tube" on the wire to the tweeter, i thought that was going to work as a crossover and block low frequencies..

Since i have no idea where the fault is i am just considering buying a pair of coaxials and disconnect the tweeters

That should be it, its is directional though, so if the wires are the wrong way round it will have no effect. it should be on the + from the main speaker if I recall.
