Woosh/rubbing noise from clutch or turbo anything to worry about....

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Had my new mk3 VRS tdi a few weeks and can't help but notice that if you go to accelerate at a roundabout and then dip the clutch immediately to apply the break and stop again quickly you get a weird woosh sound that I can only describe as the turbo spinning off or something with the clutch. Its definitely noticeable and I can get the car to do it again and again. Try it yourself, go to pull off with some acceleration and dip the clutch and apply the break just before you've completely lifted the clutch peddle. I'm hoping this is normal and others hear the same on their car....  My car is in the dealers next week for its door seals to be replaced but I don't want to make a fuss over nothing if its normal! Fingers crossed nothing wrong with the car at this early stage of ownership.

Cheers

Not sure if they have them but sounds a bit like the sound a dump valve would make that the chavs use to put on their little cars to make them sound better, I get a similar sound though not as pronounced with my Passat TDI, but others more knowledge of the Octavia can probably set your mind at ease.

I think I noticed a similar noise, but I wasn't sure how to replicate.

Please let us know what your dealer says.

There is usually no dump valve on modern diesels, they normally use variable geometry turbos to regulate the boost.

What you describe is quite feasibly boost noise.

When you remove your foot from the accelerator pedal, the exhaust temperature reduces quickly & the turbo will spin down.

However, how loud is the noise?

I can't ever recall hearing any noise from the air induction system on my vRS.

If it is a reasonable loud "whooshing" noise this could be a sign of a leak in the boost system where air being sucked in.

Can you reproduce this same sound revving the engine with the bonnet open?

If you are taking the car to the dealer anyway, you should mention/demonstrate it to them & ask the to take a quick look.

Might be a simple fix like a jubilee clamp needs tighening.

My MK11 Octy 2.0 TDi used to make this sound from new. It happened between gear changes whilst accelerating or if you took your foot off the accelerator suddenly, even without de-clutching or braking. I was told this was normal and was associated with the variable vane geometry in the turbo resetting itself as it spun down.

Interestingly, my wife was driving a 1.7 Corsa CDTi at the time which made a more raucous version of the same sound, and she took it into the local Vauxhall dealer to have it sorted - they came back with the same explanation!

Thanks for the replies! I'll ask the dealer when it goes in next week. If anyone else knows what I'm talking about then please let me know :)

Cheers!
