Today i'm having 4x4 propshaft grumbles...

Featured Replies

Yesterday I fixed the dogbone mount... It was a challenge, but driving to work today it felt so much better (just with standard rubber bushes too!)

Tonight driving home, down a long hill in 3rd, for a bit of engine braking, around 2000rpm, I got a floor rumbling which instantly reminded me of my landrover days. feels like a propshaft UJ thats had enough or just needs a good greasing.

Mine is a mk1 1U5 arx powered 4x4 estate manual 5 speed with 150k on the clock.

Can anyone tell me part numbers for the rubber donuts (are front and rear different?)

is the middle UJ serviceable or at least blessed with a grease nipple?

any other things worth checking first (by that I mean the cheap and easy ones!)

Google hasn't been very kind to me so far on this subject, so any help will be appreciated (eg, which bolts will snap off, how to best remove them, what other bits i will break whilst doing the job etc)

Front donut seems to be:

Joint, propshaft - Febi Bilstein 19532

Bolt Hole Circle Ø [mm]: 97

Rear seems to be ( :swear: expensive!)

19526 (£156! :whew: )

1J0 521 307 D

Prop shaft centre bearing/carrier, UJ???

Help?

Just the info I required!

My next question is how the hell do you access the front prop rubber? I was under it (again) today.. surveying the task..

It looks like exhausts & heatshields have to come off, then its a long reach spline bolt aiming at it up the transmision tunnel, with all four wheels off the ground to allow the prop to turn to get all bolts...

That's as far as I got as i decided it was too hard for a Sunday afternoon!

I had a shake on the prop, and everything seems nice and tight, so I'm thinking its time to order the parts and replace the lot when I have a full weekend to go at it.

Thanks for the part numbers, i'll do the googling from here and decide if I need to remortgage or not

p.s.  forgot the middle CV joint (kit)  1JO 517 279   joint washers etc  sorry never done one ---yet

I'll let you know what you're in for!

Although currently its behaving itself, i'm wondering if all the heavy rain/floods/puddles you could class as small lakes etc has resulted in a bit of water getting in the bearing/joint.

Added to the to do list once the warmer weather appears. Presently highs of 1° on a weekend here, not the best conditions to be laid on your back under a car.
