Smelly Superb

Featured Replies

As I'm not driving (again) I'm not using the Superb every day but every now and then Sharon takes me to a hospital appointment.

My god it stinks in there! Sharon and the kids have looked around and can't find anything organic. The last time I had a car smell like this, there was a rotting banana in the front seat back pocket.

So, with all the rain we've had, I'm wondering if one of the drains is blocked up and that's causing the carpets to get wet? Where are the usual culprits on the Superb?

Could be the aircon - There is usually some residual moisture left in the evaporator & pipes behind the dashboard where eventually bacteria, mold, fungi, and micro-organisms can start to grow & smell - especially when a car isn't used. Time for an air-con service/ chemical attack!

As already mentioned, get the air con cleaned out. The evaporator is a breeding ground for bacteria and those bacteria can give off a horrid smell. Also get the pollen filter changed as they can get damp and go mouldy.

You need a specialist (read: Skoda dealer) to clean the evaporator properly as it's buried inside the dash. They use a special tool to get the biocide right onto the surface of the evaporator, or else it doesn't work properly.

In addition to this, one of those Comma air con cleaning 'bombs' from Halfords is a good idea. It gets in contact with all internal surfaces of the car, as well as the air con ductwork

Check under all of the floor mats for any signs of damp or moisture. Also check under the plastic scuttle panel around the wipers for a buildup of leaves and debris.

On a nice day (not sure when that will be, mind!), open the car up to get some fresh air through it. Consider pressure washing and shampooing the floor mats as well, they harbour all manner of muck which can't always be seen.

Check every nook and cranny of the car. I found a pack of rotten old Peppa Pig cheese flavoured snacks in the rear seat cupholder storage compartment which was making my car smell 'orrid! One of my dear children decided to 'store' them in there without telling me! Look under the rear seat squabs as they can get missed.

On the old superb as with the Passat the phelmun chamber drains (drains for scuttle) used to block giving the off a smell like bad eggs Organic waste from leaves etc.

Might be the same ?

That happened to me when the kids were young , after a search I found a rotting makky D burger in the boot in amongst the junk that women and kids like to keep in the car

Update: seems much better now after a couple of longer journeys. It was in for a service yesterday so a changed pollen filter can't hurt either.
