Loss of power, is it the clutch?

Featured Replies

The last few days I've had a massive loss of low end power almost like something is holding the car back..... Does this mean it's the clutch? If so I can not smell the burning nor is it slipping?

Thanks

Danny

Do the revs increase without an increase in speed. If not unlikely to be the clutch.

sounds like the car is going into limp mode, get a scan from someone with VCDS as the fault will be logged in the system

does the car seem fine after restarting? as this normally what happens when it goes into limp mode.

The revs rev normal, it's just like somethings holding it back and then all of a sudden it lets go then you pick up speed normal?

Any warning lights on?

Nope no warning lights, that's why I thought it might be the clutch

Fault code scan time. A lot of problems won't result in warning lights.

As previously mentioned you need the car scanned with VCDS

Is it a petrol or diesel VRS? If a petrol this could be a coil pack misfire - if not too bad doesn't always show up as a fault on VCDS

It's a diesel, thanks for your time guys

Maybe it's turbo related?

A friend of mine had his car serviced and the one turbo-related connection wasn't tightened enough. The car was so weak. He returned, they did the job and 10 mins later it was fine again. So, maybe in your case it's not a big deal after all but you'll know that only after an inspection (scanning by VCDS, garage inspection, whatever).

It feels as if there's reall bad turbo lag then 3500 rpm it kicks in

What is a vcds scan?

My service light come on couple of days ago this wouldn't effect it would it?

Had the aa out to it this morning, no fault codes on diagnostics test, he took her for a spin and it's fine!

Sounds like an intermittent Turbo issue as mentioned, but have you checked your brakes, ie not binding and then letting go?

If you feel the car holding back for a short run, pull up somewhere safe and check the discs (or even your wheel if it is bad) to see if any one of them is hot.

In such case don't touch them your fingers. Better spit on them - if one is really hot, you will understand. Once I burnt my finger being not careful at all :)

If there was an intermittent fault with the turbo would that be clear from scan or would it still show a fault?

Really wouldn't imagine this would show up on a scan, I could be wrong though.

Someone else will possibly give a better answer. Maybe even someone on here with VCDS that lives close enough to you, to scan for faults for you.

There is a register of VCDS owners on here somewhere.

Cheers thank you

If it's a diesel sounds very much like a sicky vnt mechanism on the turbo.

This is the fault code I've had done today P0299 boost pressure control below control limit, done by the AA any answers???

as suggested above, common when vnt is sticking
