Spare Wheel v No Wheel

Featured Replies

So if you do not have a spare wheel , are Run Flats an option ?

Most incidents these days , one way or another , invariably require the purchase of a new tyre .

Now retired , the idea that my wife would be able to replace a wheel in a remote area at night is not an option .

  • In yesterday's rain the Tyre Pressure Monitor pinged and the warning light came on. Stopped when it was safe to do so, walked (quickly!) round the car looking at all four tyres. Nothing seemed amiss.

  • The spare wheel brings the floor level with the boot sill. Personally I wouldn't be without the spare. You can remove it and the storage boxes that surround it if you want to.   Andy

Not on a Yeti.

Wheels rims are not designed for them

Not all cars have the required tyre pressure failure system

Car has not been Type Approved for their fitment

So spare wheel kit arrived today. The spare wheel is huge and not far off a full size wheel.

Was expecting something a lot skinnier

Makes you wonder if it's worth it.

If you're going to have a speed restricted 'get-you-home' tyre for desperate circumstances, engineering so little actual 'space saving' is odd to me.

It's a personal thing, isn't it?  The (non-'Skinny') 50mph-limit spare was quite adequate for a few days while my new set of rubbers were delivered.  It saved me having to buy an odd replacement that would scupper my planned ditching of all four OE Conti's.

I'd prefer a proper 5th wheel, then I only need one new one for the front and one worn one becomes the spare........lie when the two front ones wear down.

Defiantly daft having a 16" space saver when the main wheel is 17" and I recon just as wide. Loose enough height in the boot so may as well loose a bit of the under floor storage and have a full size wheel.

Entirely your choice.  As a matter of interest, what do you have in your Pugeot?

Maybe not as young as I was, but not daft yet.  Sorry - I can't remember: what do you use?

Pretty much standard issue 'space saver' these days.

Well fitted the kit this morning and it's only now I feel disappointed.

At least with the fabia you have the hole whether or not you have the spare wheel. With this it just takes over the boot and when the seats are folded you have a big drop down. Not sure where I will put the dog cage now as used to go behind the drivers seat with 1 rear seat folded down. Won't fit in the gap now :-(

Just checked the spare wheel (which I ordered as an extra) . All seemed fine including the Jack and tools then I realized that the spare is a 16 inch spacesaver.

Fine with it's a spacesaver but the car rolls on 17ins standard spec .

Can I use a 16 ins temporary along side 17 s ?

Yes, the circumference is nearly the same.

A very good point about the possibility of a buckled wheel.  My new Yeti will be my first car without a full-sized spare, which I would have specified had I been able to.  I'm not sure I would trust the tyre sealant, although I suppose it works.  Madness not to go with the space-saver though.

I have seen, recently, a chap connecting his inflate and repair to a tyre with a 3-4"

coachbolt through it!

How much nicer to be able to change the wheel for one from the boot.

Incidently do you need different wheel nuts if going from an alloy wheel

to the steel spare?

I noticed in one of the videos I watched on YouTube the car being tested had a full size spare in a fibreglass cowling on a hinged bracket at the back of the rear door. What a shame that isn't a UK option.

No, not on the Yeti.

It will never be in the EU and most of the world, in that manner, because it fails the regulations over visibility of the tail lights when it is "open"
