chimeara VS fd3s rx7 ...........

Featured Replies

well as sum as u may no, me ma bruv and me dad are purchasing a supercar to have a play around with... we were ded set on a mazda fd3s rx7... but had a look on auto trader it turns out we can have a tvr chimaera for around the same money

the specs of both cars are:

mazda rx7:

essentialy a 2616 cc twin turbo rwd with approx 280 bhp (obvs its a 654X2 rotary w.a.n.kel engine)does about 15-20 mpg

weve got about 9 grandish so that would cover the engine rebuild they need at 60k and bodymods and maybe a few engine mods.

tvr chimeara

lookin at the 4.0 v8 rwd pumps out around 250 bhp and a very torquey engine.no driving aids such as PAS or ABA and that does approx 20-25 mpg. as said weve got about 9 grand so thought would cover a 94 reg one.. obvs its a convertible.

they both have an unreliabile myth but ive been on mazdarotary club and tvr cc club and it seems that it doesnt really exist. justa myth.. tvr's have electrical problems but thats teeeny weeny problem if any

i personally have a preference towards the tvr and tvr's in general always have been my favourite manufacturer of cars up until pagani came along.. summink about them and nothing will beat a tvr ROAR..plus its british (was) and that counts for summink.

so what do u think?? which one....... HELP

If you can get a TVR that's been well looked after and has a decent service history then thats the one I'd go for. It'll be more entertaining to drive and by now any problems should be sorted. It will also hold it's value a lot better as long as you don't end up parking it in a ditch.

You might also want to watch Top Gear tonight.

Apparently they are trying to buy a mid engined supercar for £10k. It'll probably show you what not to do :D

these cars are quite different isn't a tvr more of a gt type car? if your thinking of tuning it up and lots of power then i would say the rx7 is the way to go and the tuning industry for that is massive! saying that, nothing quite sounds like a tvr and the chimeara is more of a 'supercar'... i would suspect the two would be completely different to drive in terms of handling and power delivery (tvr lots of torque, mazda liking revs to shift) so maybe consider that also?

yeh they are completely diffo... tuning up would not be a priority as well...... 250 bhp is enough in ma books and tbh nemore would be borderline insanity.....im only 19 so me driving skills aint the best yet so no more power.....the joy of a tvr as its got a rover v8 engine so can be serviced by the remaining rover dealers which would be hella lot cheaper.......... i dunno im torn i like them both.majority of tvr's have beeen owned by enthusiasts and tend to all have a full service history....plus i wont have to worry about a grey import which has had crash damage without ne way of checking........torn help help

smerko yeh its more of a grand tourer than out and out supercar and can be driven depending on your mood like a grandad or like your pants are on fire....its ment to be the sensible tvr if there ever was one....

the rx7 is more of a supercar ie coupe but i personally wouldnt class it in there.. its a mild supercar... but is menna be a handfull even more so than the tvr

Have you had any insurance quotes for either car yet?

Adding a 19 year old even as a named driver will add ££££££'s to the cost

Have a look over on Pistonheads web site, they are quite often selling decent TVR's, which would get my vote.

I'd go with the TVR - they do something like 60 in about 4.5 seconds and 100 in 12 seconds, despite the 40bhp power defecit to the Mazda. You also have the lovely V8 burble and a nice leather and wood interior :D Only downside is one of you will have to stay behind as it's only a 2 seater ;)

chris u are crrect..... there a 200kg difference i think ie i think the tvr weighs 1020 kg and the rx7 is 1200kg sumink.well the joy of this car is im gonna have most access to it as my dad only wants to drive it when its hot sunny and not raining and ma bruv can only get to it every monday... so basically free reign so no one will be left behind:thumbup: does vikki vrs own a tvr grif???

which potentially do u think will either get jealousy damage or thefted (gonna be garage btw) more??

which potentially do u think will either get jealousy damage or thefted (gonna be garage btw) more??

i'd say the rx7 and even more so if you added a few mods to it!

i would have thought the tvr would have more chance of 'lashing out' due to its low down torque so may be more forgiving to drive at times. the mazda would be easier to drive slowly if desired to to its engine characteristics i.e. not the heavy low down torque.

If he wants something with a bit of character for high-days and holidays then it just has to be the TVR. I had a Chimaera for 6 years. They're a pussy cat once you tame your right foot and realise the extra long throttle travel is the traction control. Completely different car to the Mazda for sure.

Buy on condition in a colour you like - not miles (Rover V8 lasts fine) or age/gadgets. He'll either love or hate PAS. You'll get a good '95 car for that money if you shop around - most for sale on Pistonheads have been cherised - good sign. TVRs hate not being used so low miles does not mean more reliable. Mine was running better at 52k when I sold it than at 15k when I bought it.

Oh, in 6 years of Chimaera-ing and now 18 months of T350-ing I've never been let down by either car - been all over Europe numerous times. They do need cosseting and regular fiddling with though, if he's into that he'll love it - if not he'll hate the whole concept and maybe he should just get a nearly new Golf GIT.

i personally think the mazda would be harder to drive as it would have torque surges at gentle driving like any turbo'd car, they can be a pain to drive steady on the boost boundary.

TVR everytime for me :)

I looked at newer TVR's before deciding to get the Boxster. It has to be a TVR, just make sure you get a good one.

Quiet a few around for under 9K, and newer than you might think. If you can try and get a newer version, one with chrome surrounds on the instruments and has the door release further away from the gearstick. I think they look far better.

everyone knows that a tvr is quick. do a project sleeper and have some fun.building it and driving it:D
