Quick poll if you will and it involves skodas!

The leon is 18 months old, probably with little or no equity in it, but mileage is creeping up. Plan was to look to change middle of this year. However, a super dooper offer from my local dealer by invitation only has popped up, so I've agreed to go along and have a chat.

In essence, my options are to consider chopping in the leon now and taking advantage of sale price + 0% finance + deposit contribution on either of following:

Octavia diesel vrs

Octavia 230

Superb diesel

Superb 280

Leave until later in year and include other brands per original loose plan.

I suspect the superbs will be too expensive (target no increase in current monthly payment), and that the octavia just a bit too sleepy after the leon. The sole advantage being more space, all choices would be estate and manual)

Go and have a look. Tell them what you want and see what they can do. Superb 280 for me all the way. Bit of exclusitivity and I'd have thought some good deals.

Is it worth getting a quote on a Leon ST Cupra 290? I'm sure they are on 0%too and have big discounts. Or do you fancy a change away from Seat?

I'd imagine all of the above cars will feel big and slow compared to your current chariot.

I looked at the Suberb 280. Lovely car, albeit a bit on the lardy size. Great it you do 40k a year Steve ;)

Trouble was the figures are not good over 2/3 years because of the depreciation. You would need to keep it for a few years to make it work.

I've been a Skoda faithful since I bought my first (52 plate vRS) but I'm afraid I think you'd be better looking at alternative manufacturers, especially if leasing.

The latest gen Skodas really don't do it for me - the styling of the Octavia is bland and the drive is average.  The new Superb looks the business but, again, the drive is just average, nothing special, unique, refined - you get my point.

Still this is a personal opinion and choice, so why not test drive and look at the figures/deals - might be right up your street.  If not, then you know you can start looking elsewhere!

The ST 290 is not part of same offer, it's a dealer special for loyal customers on skoda only, otherwise that would be an easy decision.

I thought the new octavia a much better steer than the mk2 which was pretty so so, but the only big plus factor is the size, which the leon has none. And cheapness, of which the superb has none either. Mind you, £25k for a brand new with needed options for a 230 estate is pushing the definition of value too...

Thing is its a 200mile round trip, a long way for chewing the fat over a coffee and a calculator.

Long way, exactly!  I'd save my time and money - the words deal and loyalty from a dealership are pretty empty ones. Without sounding negative, is there a local dealer you could visit, test drive etc? I think the SEAT range has come on leaps n bounds and given the choice would probably stick with a Leon.

Well, a 230 estate at say £100 a month less plus the £500 fuel plus a few goodies chucked in. How good is the canton sound system?

Strike that out. I didn't really think it would work unless a massive discount or nearly new..

In truth Tom, now mine is std again it's sloooow. So, another leon is only so exciting, only new thing would be space. Interior is pretty crap in the leon too.

So, interesting afternoon and have overnight to decide. Options are octavia estate diesel vrs, saves me about £30 a month on finance. But why would you take the vrs over the SLE in diesel form, assuming I can get the 190 ps engine in that trim. Basically it's slow, but space for the dog. Option 2 is a 190 ps superb. I could spec up a new SLE with 19" alloys and canton stereo which is about £60 more finance cost. Downside it's a 16 week lead time. Alternatively, there's one in the showroom, but has a pile of options that don't really interest me, and doesn't include stereo upgrade. It's also another £20 on top again. In all cases though I'd be saving around £50 a month in fuel costs and there's a £500 fuel voucher with all options

So, stick or twist?!

Anyone?

Sounds like head over heart :(

Breath in, look a liitle harder, and don't buy something you don't really want. ;)

Sometimes you just have to do that. The last time it applied it was a 1.6 tdci focus, so maybe not so bad...

Mine was a Vectra 1.9CDTi :(

Set up a business 10 years ago and had to cut all my costs.

Was very much a means to an end.

Well I think a superb diesel is a bit less of a compromise. It's a nice place to sit in for hours, which the leon is frankly being wasted whilst doing that.

Right, decision made. Superb 190 diesel in snot green estate with 19" alloys and canton stereo. The fuel and VED savings alone more than offset the incremental finance costs. Alternative is to hang on to the leon for another 2 years.

Is the Leon leased?

Has it to be returned to standard before returning, and is the Manufactures Warranty still valid after having had the car remapped if it was to have any issues requiring a Warranty Claim on the Engine / Gearbox ?

Pcp George. It's not remapped

To make it even easier for you the Superbs only available in DSG.

Well that turned out differently. End up doing a deal on a white hatch in showroom. Has a longish option list, sadly not the canton stereo but I can live without that. It might not be a handler but I live on the motorway. The challenge was around £3k negative equity in the leon, which given my mileage and it's depreciation meant hanging onto it another 18 months. The net cost is around £100 a month cheaper

Don’t get too hyped up with the fuel savings!.... I do not think there is any MKIII Superb TDi owner who is getting anywhere near the quoted mpg figures... and I am talking by quite some margin!

I am still happy with my purchase, but when Škoda claim up to 64 mpg you would have thought that 50 mpg was easily achievable wouldn’t you?

(my driving is mostly motorway and dual carriageway with very little traffic) the fuel economy is quite a bit down on my MKI Superb (PD130) and MKII Superb (CR170)

  • Author

I did my calcs using 45mpg and 32 for leon. Both based on the trip comp figures on the actual car run by dealer manager and mine obviously.
