OIL /SUMP CAPACITY /FILTER/ COOLER FILTER.

Featured Replies

1)- I've searched Haynes for oil change, and found nothing. Anyone let me into  secret  of how much oil I need on a change ( with filter).

2) - Haynes gives position of filter as mid front looking from front. Sort of large plastic nut on a metal container.

3)  But is there a separate cooler filter to change at oil change times. Situated down behind the NS headlamp ,only visible when under cover is removed.

HELP- I'm BAFFLED for the first time in my 50 year motoring life. Which includes major engine surgery /head rework and even BMC suspension work . our Open Reach MATES are lucky as when I came out of my time as an Apprentice, we did our own servicing, assisted by GPO garage staff, and I was extra lucky as our  Mechanic in charge was one of the sort that loved to pass on his skills to anyone that wanted to learn. No breakdown service in those days. You phoned in and if you got it going again, and limped back then, you gained massive brownie points .

On extra filter.

For a basic oil and filter change draining from the sump and refill you will use about 4.5 litres. The oil normally comes in 5 litres so should be plenty.

On the 1.4 three cylinder TDi despite the smaller engine they have an extended sump so still use the same quantity of oil as the 1.9 four cylinder. As said its around 4.3 litres normally.

What's the idea or need for an extra filter on these out of interest? :)

No there is no extra filter under the no headlight as standard and the oil cooler is a heat exchanger directory below the oil filter.

I know some older tdi engines had a filter for the turbo oil supply and some of the more agricultural stuff sometimes has a centrifugal filter as an extra. But nothing else on the vw motors apart from the oil pickup screen and the oil filter.

Thought it sounded a bit strange tbh!

So that leaves me baffled as to what one fast fit place changed ,when they changed a paper filter in a metal bowl, near the NO, headlamp, high up behind the radiator. Deffo oil, though ( as they'd not ordered in all the seals and it leaked oil when engine started).

Haynes shows oil filter at centre front of engine, accessible from under bonnet.

That sounds like the fuel filter.

Except, that due to not ordering/fitting a seal, the "filter" leaked engine oil when the engine was started. Fuel filter ,as shown on Haynes, is on driver side perhaps, I've mixed sides., so let's go with Passenger side , under the battery, and I'd say under the power steering reserve There is deffo a bowl, with a paper filter in it, with a 36m nut on it.. Bowl is metal, and filter is paper, which conforms to that ordered by  manager of FF place. I was present, when the "filter" was removed, and it was deffo engine oil that was in the "filter"

Very weird, I can't think of anything under the battery which would be connected to the engine and have engine oil in it.

There's nothing on EKTA showing any kind of oil pipe/filter/reservoir under the passenger inner wing, on any model derivative of Mk1 Fabia

The 36mm nut is whats on the top of the normal oil filter housing, which is a alloy bowl you describe with a paper filter in, but that's no where near the battery??

Plus what kind of place does a filter change and forgets to replace the seal on the top of the housing? The seals come in the oil filter box as standard

Nothing as standard there the oil filter is 36mm but more in the middle of the car. Power steering is under ns headlight and there is no room for anything else there.

I'm presuming your in the UK and it's rhd?

Fuel filter is behind on headlight and will leak if the seals are not replaced.

Best bet is get a pic of this "filter" so we can see.

Felicia- first item on agenda, but I've got to get oil + filter for change, and ask SIL  for help, as these days, I struggle to get into car, far less get under and take off the lower guard & sump  plug.Car is UK ,rhd, 04 TDI 1.4. TBH,I saw the "filter" and also ( in hindsight should have known better) thought it was oil filter .However, oil did come out of this when engine was started .

Might be worth mentioning the oil filter nut on my 1.4TDI is 32mm, not 36mm. Not sure if all will be the same.

Thanks, Dazza. i've now come to the conclusion( in hindsight) that whatever was changed at that time, was not the oil filter. I've no idea what happened after, as due to the problems with car leaking oil after "filter" change, and time to cure it, I had to leave car with them and head out on a job. Manager's excuse was that a seal needed was not included in kit. With a lot of years of this place doing a few out of garage jobs /tyre replacement/ exhaust work etc, I'd a lot of faith in them, and the price of oil + filter was far less than I'd pay for oil alone, ever mind labour+ promise of an equal quantity of 505.01  oil. Mind you- it was all as a thank you for all the business I put their way.
