Selling a car while car insurance companies are shut?

Featured Replies

What would happen if i sold my car and the insurance companies are shut so there was no way of contacting them and the person who bought the car crashed the car the same day while they were uninsured?

It hasn't happened to me but surely i shouldn't have any responsibility as it's sold and it wouldn't be my fault that the insurance company was closed.

As for the OP, I guess it's all down to how much risk you're prepared to take. When I bought my latest car I test drove it without the seller even asking for any proof I was insured, I then checked it

Date *and* time the receipt of sale.  Simples

Be sure you have cancelled your Insurance Policy before allowing them to leave with the vehicle which has now no VED valid on it.

You still can be considered as being the Registered Keeper.

So best be sure the buyer shows you some proof they have Insured & Taxed the car before it leaves your keeping.

It would still be on the MID under your policy - if the buyer has no insurance your insurer could well end up having to deal with any third party claim as the 'insurer concerned'.

If you sold a car on a Sunday where my current insurer closes at 2pm! If i sold a car at 4pm what are you actually meant to do because i wouldn't say i cant sell you it till i cancel my insurance tomorrow for them to then walk away from the deal.

You can still sell them the car, they simply pick it up the following morning.

You asked the question, you know the risks, you do as you want.

Like Dr Pepper says, 'What's the worst that can happen'.      It is just selling a car after all.

Same as buying a car when they are shut though, you either have to buy it when they are open or use Temp-cover. Bit of a farce. Especially when I bought mine as I rang them up only half an hour after they shut so had to spend £70 on Temp for a couple of days.  :x

How did that enable you to get valid VED on the car?

Insurance is not checked when buying ved.

If you have a reasonable idea the car is going to be sold, can you not advise the insurer in advance that at '4pm 23rd jan" a new person is buying the car from me, so my policy will be ending then.

i did it with swmbos wen swappjng her car on her birthday - gave insurance a call a few days before to arrange swap over as it was goung to be collected from dealer and brought to our house out of hours during her party.. no hassle involved at all...

That ved issue i cant comment in, we still tax cars and it travels with the car regardless of owner changes - renewal notice goes to new owner as per chamge of owner form..

but what if the sale goes through and you're left with an uninsured vehicle? :(

It depends on what type of car you are selling, the last 4 or 5 cars I've sold have been Sub £5k and every single one has brought cash and drove away, and why wouldn't you? Why make 2 trips if you are happy with the car.

I mean i'm damn sure none of them phoned up their insurance before driving off but it does show what a lot of people are like and willing to chance driving with no tax or insurance. A lot of people think they are insured to drive any car third party but this is not the case if their is no fully comp. insurance on the car to begin with.

i presume meant if it doesnt go through?

Then you just have to suck it up, leave it on the drive and wait for them to reopen - explain it didnt go through, and if they are a half decent lot one would hope theyd reinitiate the policy..

is it?

i've sold a few bikes like that. Guy turns up, likes it, gets pound notes out of his pocket or transfers money online (or on the phone to his bank)

happy days.

Off he goes.

I've also bought bikes in exactly the same way.

I did mean that, yes. Sorry, tired haha.

Full Comp is not required on a car, not even 3rd party fire and theft.

But to be on the Public Highway, the Vehicle must have the minimum of 3rd party cover,

then the driver / drivers require their cover to drive it provided by the Vehicles Policy Holder or their Policy cover.

(Well except the car abandoned outside my house on the road since October, with VED on it until May, no MOT since November and no VED,

Police Scotland Officers and Angus Council Environmental & Refuse are just not bothering to move their butts and

a Police Officer even said if it was not being driven it is not illegal to be on the road with no MOT or Insurance.)

Lets see what her senior officers opinion is on that tomorrow.

Somebody doesnt know the law on that then!

Pull it out the way with the Jimny. You know you want to ;).

LOL.

Actually that happened the day the MOT Expired, it shifted a ickle bit, and the Officer noticed at that point it had moved.

surely the simple answer is to email the insurance company cancelling the insurance? that way you have a time/date stamp of when you cancelled it.

You can report untaxed vehicles to the DVLA yourself. https://forms.dft.gov.uk/report-an-untaxed-vehicle/

I've sold a car privately and my insurers weren't open at the weekend. The friday before I called them to say I was likely selling the car and they made a note. When I sold it I had the buyer sign and date a receipt for the car. I then sent an email off to the insurer to confirm the sale. I think thats about as much as I could have done.

When I last bought a car privately, I did make two trips, once to view and once to collect with all paperwork so that I was covered.

FUBAR,

It is not untaxed, it has no MOT now and no Insurance, so it is actually Untaxed,

but then Police Scotland have known that since 9th November 2015, and have contacted another Areas police force to contact the Registered Keeper. Mean time the tyres are now flat.

Can you blame em for dumping it?

Nevertheless. Toxic might buy it off the authorities? :D.

Seriously though. If it wasnt any neighbours or anything, i would of shifted it to somewhere out of my way i think :D.
