Engine issue

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

My girlfriend's Fabia started to develope some serious problems, I was wondering if anybody could tell if it's worth taking the car to a mechanic (or straight to the breaker hence it's low value)

It's a 2003 1.4 100 BHP engine.

Problems are:

Engine management and EPC warnings are constantly on (amber),

Eninge sounds rough,

16684 Random misfire,
16685 Cylinder 1 misfire,
16687 Cylinder 3 misfire,
16804 Catalyst System; Bank 1: Efficiency Below Threshold,
16955 Brake Light Switch (F): Implausible Signal,
Also eating oil and coolant with about +25% increase in fuel consumption.

I suspected it's the head gasket, but was told that would result in having blue-ish smoke coming from the exhaust when cold starting. It's not overheating, no excessive smoke either. Starts instantly when hot or cold.

I appreciate your suggestions as I'm not an expert unfortunately.

Daniel

Misfires will be failing coil pack(s).

Cat fault will be due to fouling and should burn off once the other problems are solved.

New brake light switch needed.

Coolant loss will be leaking from the bottom of the radiator on the passenger side.]

Oil consumption will be crankcase pressurisation from a blocked breather labyrinth.

This is what happens when a car gets no maintenance whatsoever until it's barely running. Incredible that you want to scrap it when there's so little wrong with it.

The misfires could be as simple as spark plugs that are worn out due to lack of maintenance. If its been driven like this a lot that it may have done some irreversible damage to the cat
