Help please, cars broke down :(

Featured Replies

Hi

Wondered if anyone could help.

My car was running badly, so did the trick suggested in here of unplugging the MAF, can then ran fine. So ordered a new Bosch one. Fitted it, cars ran fine, driven a total of maybe 40 miles.

But today going to work I noticed when dipping the clutch and coasting as the revs drop the car very nearly stalls.

Came to start the car to leave work, check light came on, car runs badly (still does if unplug the new Maf) like it almost stalls.

It won't Rev over 1200 revs, plugged a cheap fault reader in and says po221 error code, throttle pedal position sensor or something.

Any help as to where to start fixing it?

Thanks.

Oh yeah it's a 2002 mk1 Octavia VRS.

I think it will need resetting with vcds. I haven't had this problem but I'm sure others on here have done throttle alignment after throttle body clean.

Hope you get it sorted

Thanks for the link.

Think what needs resetting? I've not unplugged anything but the Maf

Try clearing the codes and see what happens?

Yeah, didn't help, came straight back up. Cars left at work now so can't play with it until tomorrow.

Chamging the maf changes what the car detects airflow wise which changes the fueling ratio, which is linked to throttle and therefore position sensor... so the sensor needs to be alligned with the maf reading..

Nothing to do with the MAF.

You've either got a TB (Throttle Body) wiring fault or the actual position sensor in the TB itself has failed.

My first thought, even before I finished reading #1 and saw the error code.

Thanks for above, just been to look at the car.

If the maf is plugged in the car will Rev, but won't idle, nearly stalls then jumps back to 1300 revs.

Maf unplugged idles fine but won't Rev.

Still has all the lights on.

Any other codes come up at all?

Mine did this when a coil pack failed.

These are the 2 fault codes I just read.

It's has the new coil pack as they had a recall?

If the TB wiring is ok i"d say It's either the TB or the Throttle Pedal at fault.

Check the carpet around the Throttle Pedal for damp as it's common for the Plenum Chamber drains to get blocked, which in turn leads to water ingress around the drivers footwell. If water gets into the Pedal electrics there's going to be issues.

This, and it is possible for the sensor (variable resistor) to wear out.

Just my 2p's worth on this too - are all the coil packs ok? Regular fault on these....

Right, I've plugged the old Maf in, reset all the codes, cars fine??

Is there something I should have done when putting the new MAF in?

Normally there is no need to do anything with new maf as the Ecu learns new values.

Was it a genuine MAF you used?

I'm happy the MAF I had was crap, I'm sending it back. Going to get a genuine one from VW.

Best way. Are you on Facebook?

Yeah I'm on Facebook?

Search for Sean Kemp he might be able to help get a genuine MAF a bit cheaper for you.
