Tax Exempt

Featured Replies

Can anyone unconfuse for me when a car beomes Road Tax exempt ?

My understanding is that when a car is over 25 yrs old, this is when it applies.

So a car registered in 1980, will become tax exepmt in 2006 .

Is this correct ? , or is it any car registered before 1973 are the only cars that are ever exempt. ?

That used to be the case of 25 years, but now it is if the car is registered before 1973 ish, Damn, my golf turned 25 this year too :(

I always thought it was 25 yrs as well...... probably some r sole in a suit somewhere decided to change it to get some more money

Everyone is correct. It is for cars who were over 25 years old in 1998. They will prob do it again in a few years.

To Quote

'Vehicles constructed before 1st January 1973 that are not used for hire or reward or in connection with a trade or business'

This covers up to (and possibly including) L Reg Suffix vehicles.

L ran from Aug 1st 1972 to July 31st 1973, so whether all L reg cars are covered I do not know. I know the Viva Estate my parents owned between 73 and 77 wouldn't have been covered - if it was still on the road.

This was a tax break given by the previous government but was abolished when Mr Brown became chancellor in 1997.

Problem is, can you really use an old L Reg car for day to day running?

Wonder how many people have classics and no tax then thinking it's just 25 years

There are not many 25 year old Skoda's about are there? Does anyone want a pre VW ownership Skoda anyway!!!!

Seriously. As far as I was aware, any car that reaches 25 years old becomes tax excempt

Even if the car is road tax exempt you still need a tax disc, it just doesn't cost you anything. Presume this is to prove MOT and insurance are in place
