charge pipes how much play is ok?

Featured Replies

Ok so I'm investigating a noise that happens around 2000rpm especially in 3rd and I've decided it's probably more of a whoosh than anything else. Just had a quick inspect of cooler to turbo pipework with those 3 junctions that have those horseshoe type clips. I've noticed that the top 2 adjacent to cam belt cover have a little bit of play and aren't proper tight. You can pull pipes at joiner apart by about 1-2mm in places, is that normal or enough for a boost leak? Car doesn't seem to lose power and the noise is nonexistent after 2000rpm. Oh and it's a BLT engine.

its not really normal or good, but thats just how it is im afraid, i suspect 90% of people with the standard pipework will have the exact same problem if they checked. they arnt even the best when they are new!

Yeah I remember the same type of fitting on the TIP on the octavia and that was tight as a gnat's chuff. Do you think that could be the source of the noise? What upgrade replacements solve the problem?

I'm in the other 10%. We have gaffa tape :)

Yeah I think I'll gaffa them up after matey has finished messing around with a dodgy rocker cover bolt and look to upgrade in the future. Don't suppose anybody makes a one piece silicone hose?

Push them tight first.

There's various hard-pipe and silicone kits, but most of them are for front mounts. To be fair though, the standard intercoolers are as bad for perishing and leaking as the pipes are.

Samco make a one piece silicon top boost pipe but they are expensive. The kit also comes with the lower 90 degree bend that connects to the lower part of the intercooler.

Looks something like this

Does look good, would be a pretty penny I expect.

Make sure that the joints are tight and then cable tie them to stop them moving

Its hard to explain how to use cable ties without a pic but it does work, ive done this for the last 20k.

Do you have a pic? Do you have to kind of go across the joints?

Just over £300 including VAT from most retailers I think, can be had slightly cheaper off ebay.

Holy macaroni that's nuts

That's most of the way to a full FMIC kit.

Pretty much yeah, I'd pay around £100 and I think that's generous!

Yeah if you broke it down in terms of cost, say £25 per coupler which is a bit excessive, it's then over £200 for two bits of silicon and some jubilee clips! Lol

Edit: can be had here for £267.65

At least that's going in the right direction! Think I'd rather try new oem replacements for that kind of money
