Octavia 2 warning light problem

Featured Replies

Hey guys, can any of you kindly offer some advice please?  I am entirely new to this form having just bought a second hand Octavia 2, 2,0 tdi pd 2007. L&K.

I noticed soon after purchase and driving home after about 30 mins the brake pad warning light illuminated in yellow on the dash.

When I got home I checked the service record and noted it had been fitted with new pads front and rear less than 12k ago.  I found on this forum that the only sensor on this model was front nearside so I took off the wheel and inspected the area.  I saw a lead that exited the engine bay and split into two with one side going to a plug on the actual caliper body and the other side going to what looked like the brake pad.  This lead was shoddily covered with insulataion tape and on closer inspection I could see an earlier poor repair with two thin extension pieces of wire.

OK so I guessed the problem was probably this repair so I replaced the extension bits of wire for new and resoldered to the pad sensor plug and the end of the lead from the engine bay. Before I had chance to check I had solved the warning light issue the car battery had flattened due to non use so I attempted to jump start the car.  This was impossible as the battery was so low so I charged the battery and turned on the ignition. Now not only the brake pad senson light but the power steering and the ESP/TCI yellow lights were now lit.  I have temporarily disconnected the brake pad sensor plug behind the wheel but the ESP and power steering remain lit.  On the dash is a button with ESP OFF but pressing it does not display any image on the dash so I don't know whether SP is on or off OR in fact whether this button is the cause of the ESP/power steering lights on the dash.  Could it be the jump start attempt has caused this or have I maybe switched the wires on the brake pad sensor by mistake (this would not make sense as with the BP sensor disconnected the ESP/power steering still illuminates)?   Cheers

Any ideas will be very much appreciated.

If the battery has been disconnected then you will have warning lights on the dash, that's normal :)

I normally clear it by starting the engine and turning the steering wheel full lock left, full lock right and back to the centre. Other solutions are taking the car for a short drive as that should also clear it. If neither of these work, then you'll need to scan the car and see what error code is causing the warning to stay on.

Yep what he said.

The steering light is normal after disconnecting the battery.

The plug on the caliper body is the ABS speed sensor. This will need to be connected for the steering light to disappear as it uses the rotational speed of each wheel + the steering angle to calculate what's going on with the ESP.

+1 for the short drive...

No chance it is the brake fluid warning light?

To the Gentlemen that responded to my problem I sincerely thank you for taking the time to read and respond, I hugely value your assistance.   I will not have road legal use of the car until I tax/ insure it this weekend so I am hoping the short drive solution will right the wrong.  I will as a mark of courtesy to those who have, and are yet to reply post my findings at the weekend.

I have found this to be a great site with an enormous amount of specialist and general knowledge.  The Octavia is my first Skoda and I am blown away by the features in the Laurin & Klement.  I hope to enjoy it to the max.

Cheers guys and thanks once again.

If the power steering light is yellow, even 30ft in a dead straight line should be enough to clear the light. Once the steering light goes out the TC light should follow.

Huge thanks to all that replied.  Yes within a short drive less than 50 meters the power steering and ESP lights have gone off/ reset.

I hope to helpfully contribute to the forum in due course.  Thanks again guys.
