Auto dipping headlamp failure. Octavia Elegance mk. 3

Recommended Posts

My Elegance auto dipping headlamps have recently failed to operate  after working perfectly for a few miles at night.  I switched to manual operation - no problem at all.   Dealer seem reluctant to act.  Everything else appears to work fine.   WIndscreen clear  and unobstructed,    ! Any advice appreciated."

Do you get a failure warning on the Maxi-dot? I did on mine within 2 weeks of ownership. Control unit swapped out under warranty and no problems since.

If yours simply isn't working as you expect then that might be trickier if the system is reporting a fault, short of going for a test drive at night and establishing if it no longer functions at all or only in particular circumstances.

Our 2013 vRS has suffered a similar problem recently. The AFS system stopped working, along with the auto wipers and auto main beam.

Before all of this, we noticed the auto main beam was a little dim witted at times, when it was perfect before that.

I scanned the system and found an 'internal error' on the rain sensor/camera module.

Kicked it off to the dealership who diagnosed a faulty rain sensor. Time will tell if this cures the problem as we are waiting for the part to come in.

Basically, try to get the car scanned for faults initially. Dealerships will always drag their heels with problems that aren't glaringly obvious. If they do diagnostic work on a car and can't find proof of a problem, they might not get paid for it.

@smash has exactly the same fault on his vRS - also, tell them to put an 'A' at the end of the part number, the RLHS (with the A at the end) replaced the RLFS (without the A) at MY15 I think, you won't be able to order the older part.

5Q0 955 547 - RLFS

5Q0 955 547 A - RLHS

The only drawback is that the RLHS doesn't support rain closing :(

Baz.   Many thanks for your replies.  I'm not sure regarding  Internal Error on the rain sensor module ?or how you diagnose this without garage equipment?  The remaining systems appear to work OK,  though the rain sensor wipers  occasionally  seem "confused".   At 82 yrs. it could be me, I"m just not used to all this technology, which is a bit OTT to me.  However I think I will give the dealership another prod. as the car is still under guarantee for a few more months.   The main problem for me is demonstrating the "fault" because this appears to require Darkness and means difficulty regarding closing times on workshops and being without transport .  I live some 12 miles away from dealer!   Watch this space?

@Lisab seems you already posted here http://www.briskoda.net/forums/index.php?/topic/386097-Mark-3-Auto-dipping-headlight--failure.

As I mentioned, if you definitely have the lights on auto and you try to activate HBA you should get the message on the Maxidot. Show this to the dealer and they should sort it out under warranty. If not, complain to Skoda UK!

Seems to be a common fault given the number of people replying that they also experienced the issue. And all shortly after taking ownership.

@Lisa, how old is your car?

Thank you for the info.

This is the fault information I pulled off the car when it all went pear shaped:

(Legit VCDS)

Wednesday,23,December,2015,12:03:55:39432
VCDS -- Windows Based VAG/VAS Emulator Running on Windows 10 x64
VCDS Version: 15.7.3.0 (x64)
Data version: 20151216
www.Ross-Tech.com

934660 - Rain/light recognition sensor
          B1366 04 [008] - Internal System Fault
Intermittent - Confirmed - Tested Since Memory Clear
             Freeze Frame:
                    Fault Status: 00000001
                    Fault Priority: 2
                    Fault Frequency: 3
                    Reset counter: 246
                    Mileage: 1048574 km
                    Date: 2000.00.00
                    Time: 00:00:00

And the original part in question:

Slave 2:
   Subsystem 2 - Part No SW: 5Q0 955 547     HW: 5Q0 955 547   Labels: 5Q0-955-547.CLB
   Component: RLFS  024 0042
   Serial number: Y13M08D15H10M37S27S2
   Coding: 02805D

I'll ensure the part is an 'A' variant. No doubt i'll get funny looks but it wouldn't be the first time.

Am I right in guessing this will upset the AFS, as it looks at the rain sensor data to know whether to switch to rain mode or not?

 Baz.
Further to previous replies.   I' m not equipped with Maxi-dot?  so this  not a  possibility  (I've not even heard  of this before I looked it up)!!!!!!    T
he later diagnostics I'm afraid are beyond my knowledge and would - I think - require  specialised equipment?    The car is first registered in June 2013.   But many thanks   .Am delighted with car apart from this.,     I  recently returned over 66 to the gallon on a 50/50 motorway/ main-road run, quite, remarkable for a car this size  and  very much improved on my previous Octavia as well as being much more comfortable.  Just wish it had the 6 speed box to make it perfect.
