vRS very odd sound

Hi,

Last 2 days I've started noticing a very odd sound. It's a sort of metallic clicking sound, coming from the RHS of the engine (when behind the wheel). I've recorded short video of it:

Any ideas what it could be? It's more audible when idle (both on cold and warm engine) but I can still hear it under load (but it's more masked by the other noise).

I am quite concerned that it's something serious with the timing chain.

The sound is most apparent when going from one side of the engine to another:

There are a couple of other YouTube clips alluding to a rattling fuel line.

However, I managed to get a main dealer Service Manager to take a ride and he heard a similar noise for himself. He indicated it could be the clutch packs rattling (like a Ducati dry one) but my car rarely does it anymore so it was a bit inconclusive.

Thank you - I've seen those before (I have similar problem in my seat 1.4tsi) but this is different - the noise does not stop when revving, it's still there. It's also a bit louder. My concern is that it could be something to do with a timing chain..

Was it cold outside (<7degC) for these vids ? Does the clicking stops when its warmer ? Can you hear the clicking in idle and then it stops as soon as you touch the throttle ?

If so, it's the canister purge solenoid that's making noise when cold.

For zard, it sounds more like timing chain IMO :/

No, it was not cold outside - around 15C. And it's non-stop- clicking all the time, no matter what the engine load is.

Actually the temperature questions were for Lee, as I quoted his reply.

Concerning your problem, I would say timing chain :/

Silly question.. but how "safe" is it to drive it around / to the service?

No idea of the temperature when the videos were recorded. I know when I was at the main dealer it was around springtime so not particularly hot or cold.

Sound terrible.  No idea what that is,  but do not put off finding out.

Engine a bit messy, is it just overspill down from the Oil Filler cap?

and Engine Build date orange sticker torn,  has the engine been rebuilt?

Tell us about it,

How old, how many miles, what history does it have, have you had it long?

(Left or right hand drive? Just nosey.)

Just listened and watched on a better computer.

Have it looked at ASAP.  That is one rough sounding engine?

What servicing and such has it had done?

Ok, that's what I will do - one further observation, the sounds seems to go away when the supercharger kicks in.

Details below:

85000km at the moment, had it since 59000km. So far had two regular services at the dealer done, then the oil return tube replaced to remedy oil consumption (now stable around 0.4l/1000km in terms of oil). And yes, as I do tend to fill it frequently it is probably overspill. Left hand drive, first registered 10/06/2010. As far as I know I am the second owner (also according to the documentation). In 2012 it had its high pressure fuel pump replaced, other than that it has been pretty trouble-free experience (apart from keeping an eye on the oil).

Two weeks ago it was in a minor collision - hit a car in front of it, got the front bumper, lights and something else in the front replaced, no damage to the radiator/engine (not sure it needed new lights but it was covered by the insurance so I did not argue). After the repair it seemed to be fine but now it developed this scary sound.

Do not know about any engine rebuilds - which sticker are you referring to?

The Orange Sticker had the Build Date on it,

but being first registered 6/10 we know your car is one of the first built in left hand drive.

Another member from Spain had an issue when on a trip and required a high pressure fuel pump,

so it just dawned,

? Was that you.?

I remember the incident now.

!!!

So you many have an issue from the Accident damage.

It sounds really rather poorly.

EDIT.

Hearing and eyesight going, memory still OK.

eg,

Slow speed collision, minor damage, no engine mounts damaged, but front frame cross member replaced, bumper, bonnet., 1 light and bracket,   not cheap.

exactly like that - total cost was around 2200EUR (but covered by insurance). And yes, it is me with the fuel pump :)

Any idea if this can be related to the timing chain rattle?

EDIT: looking at the picture, I would say that what I saw was even more minor - only the side panels and bonnet were slightly bent, otherwise the front was intact

  • 7 months later...

Looks like my water pump is gone. Coolant disappearing, sort of faint rhythmical whooshing sound, that strange ticking mentioned above... Any idea how long it takes to replace, and how much the part might be? I have an hourly rate, and I know how to multiply by two to get the Australian rip-off markup...
