Bulb failure warning - but bulbs look OK ?

Featured Replies

Update, all rear nearside bulbs changed - will report in time. Could be as it's spider season but didn't think it would be so sensitive to set alarm off!  Have read on here that people have had the dealership turn the sensitivity setting down to minimum. Can it not be done by owners?

Is the battery getting on a bit?.

My query about 140 was relevant at a tangent, cos all 140s have maxidot bulb failure notification.

You can disable the wind alarm by pressing the button on the driver's door jamb.

Only other suggestion I can make is that your battery is on its way out?

Update! Hi guys and the alarm hasn't gone off again since last week so may indeed have been a spider!

As for the bulb failure, I didn't have any more notifications until a couple of days after changing the bulbs. On inspection, a top rear nearside sidelight bulb was off and smacking the offending light cluster ala Basil Fawlty style - it came back on! Alas it only lasted a day before repeated smackings and bulb warnings so I took the cluster off (again) cleaned all the bulb contacts, sprayed contact cleaner into the cluster electrical socket and screwed it back into place where the bulb still goes off (even after changing it yet again!) and needing the customary smack on the offending cluster. Now I'm all for non violence but I may have to get a tree branch out to this Yeti!

PS - not sure about the battery age but it fires up in the cold no problem.

Before you go changing batteries it made no difference to mine.

I had a bulb failure warning for a number-plate bulb which was working fine on my Superb.  Turned out that the bulb was on the way out and whilst it had not yet burned out, the resistance had changed and this was what caused the system to report it; the system monitors resistance as a criterion.

Changed the bulb; no more problems.

Funny you should say that Simon. I took my yeti into the local main dealer and they changed the four rear tail light bulbs! When I said that they were all working, they told me that they were all a bit blackened and as you say, the resistance had changed on all four. They charged £2.50 for each factory fit bulb but I didn't get to find out what brand they were.

I had a chat with someone I know and they told me they had a similar problem on a BMW and it was sorted when he changed ALL the bulbs to Bosch ones. Apparently modern cars  can only use premier brand bulbs due to the computers/maxidot systems fitted. I will be keeping an eye on the situation and if anyone can recommend which top brand bulbs to buy I will buy a box of them!

dad's 56 plate VW sharan had the intermittent bulb issue too.

Not sure on the yeti but if there's a cluster, check the connection to the lighting cluster itself from the wire.

Hi Muddyboots et all.

If you read my message in September I was driven insane by the light fault warning on the maxidot display on my Yeti Se140. I took it to my local Skoda dealer in Liverpool where they replaced 4 rear bulbs. When I said I didn't notice any bulbs had blown, they said the display picks up on a drop in resistance and guess what without tempting fate - it's been 5 months and the problem has gone! I wonder if its possible to buy the same bulbs that the Skoda dealers use? Any ideas folks?

PS - oh and I got the dealer to check out why my alarm had been going off intermittently. They did a software update and that also cleared the fault! If I had known the Yeti would have so many electrical glitches I would have stuck with my Fabia VRS which had none!

Yes, buy a genuine Skoda bulb kit from superskoda.com - it comes with a set of fuses too.  Euros 24 delivered.

Nice one - will check that one out. I did buy a set of Osram longlife bulbs but didn't get the chance to try them out.......until next time?!!

‘Spares’ will sell you them surely.

The dealership’s ‘spare parts’ division supply their ‘servicing’ division any needed components.

What was the next one as that is 1 out of 2?

At least it is easy to replace.

Did we ever get a reply and an answer to MUDDYBOOTS original post?

Most plausible explanation I've seen is that although the bulbs are still working, their resistance starts to increase and can trigger the bulb failure warning.

Glad I've found this thread - we bought a second hand Yeti a couple of months back and got the bulb warning, and had the same thing where you hit the o/s rear cluster and the light came back on - on close inspection I think the filament was slightly broken and hitting it caused the ends to touch, and as it's DC they stayed together until you turned the lights off again.

Bulb changed and the fault went, but it's been intermittently back again and I suspect one of the other tail lights might be iffy - it's my wife's car and she hasn't noticed what the maxi-dot says, only that the yellow warning light comes on then goes away again when you stop and restart.  Glad I bought a pack of 2 bulbs...!

When mine started this I changed all the rear cluster lamps. Problem went away.
