intercooler options

Featured Replies

Has anybody fitted an uprated intercooler to the CR engine?

I'm getting mine mapped in a few month and fancy fitted a bigger intercooler and Miltek exhaust.

I know the petrol cat back exhaust will fit mine but I have no idea what intercooler options I have.

I think you'll find the petrol & diesel ICs are the same pipes & mounting holes.  You can fit an S3/Golf R plastic end tank IC if you want it to look factory or get a full alloy S3 clone off ebay (they are about the cheapest) or anything above that

full alloy S3???

Does this help?

Being all alloy it will dissipate heat better than a metal/plastic mix.

Charge temps should be lower.

Will the S3 intercooler fit both varriants of MK2 VRS?

Something thats on my list, ive been quoted £700 for an uprated one, including fitment, which seems steep to me.

Plenty on Ebay for around £150 for the 56mm fitments and around £400+ for the 70mm fitments.  You will need silicone pipes if you go for the 70mm version.

I'm not an expert, I've just been looking into it to see if there is any benefits of changing it with a Stage 1 or 2 remap for the Diesel VRS.

Depends on what your after, if your upgrading the turbo and aiming for 300bhp+ then considering going for the modified Darkside or Airtec Intercooler 70mm fitment - £400+

Otherwise they are plenty of standard 56mm fitment alloys Intercoolers which are good enough for an S3. So in my mind they are good enough for up to 250-300bhp, however I maybe wrong!

Do a search on ebay you will find plenty!

Ok will have a scout about, im going stage 2 anyway, so will have around 260 bhp

I can't seem to find any pictures of the S3 FMIC fitted. Has anybody got any?

depends on what you are trying to do.

IMO, the main advantage of the full metal unit is less chance of blowing the ends off.

I'm not convinced that the full alloy units will help dissipate more heat as the end-tanks aren't in the air flow and might possibly attract heat from the engine bay.  They are still a good cooler but have got too expensive in recent years.

There are subtle differences between the plastic tank & alloy tank models.

Stock core thickness for the 1.8tsi & some of the diesels is 32mm; vRS petrol and some of the diesels is 38mm; plastic tank golfR/S3 is 40mm; alloy tank S3 is 41mm.  You really need to measure what is already fitted as IMO a +10% increase in core size is hardly worth it.

plastic end tank flows better internally and has slightly bigger in/out holes.

plastic end tank model has 4 extra bars and some other minor improvements (sorry, i can't find my notes)

Was thinking of upgrading the inter cooler whilst getting the aircon pump & condensor done, however just been given of £630 for just the alloy inter cooler!

Which is steep as they are quite a few of them on eBay for around £155, even the standard S3 one could probably be had for £300 or less.

I'm just thinking what would be the main differentiating of the costs between the 2? i.e Craftsmanship/quality, as the improvement would be rough the same.

I

what are the advantages of upgrading the intercooler?

Which model of S3 is the one for the correct intercooler?
