My16 - Rapid SB - Knocking in half lock in reverse.

Featured Replies

Got a bit of a odd one.... car was delivered last Monday, 180 miles on it now but when reversing with half or more left lock i can feel an odd knock while reversing from the front right.. (5mph max)

Feels like a ball joint type of slip which is felt in a knock.

I have felt it 4 times now, however if i stop and drive forward to repeat i cant replicate it again.  Only after a few forward miles it occurs... but not every time..

Will get it booked into the garage once i can replicate it over and over.   Only noticed it when reversing onto the drive, which is a perfect level surface.

Oh no Rick, not great news.

Are the wheel nuts tight? Get it into Skoda ASAP on such a new motor.

Argh of course not! I only mention it as it happened to me when I collected a brand new Corsa in 2006...

Thinking about it.. in the garage i have a long breaker bar and some deep sockets, reckon it will be 17mm, 18mm or 19mm so will just try in morning before i ring them.

Its not a major knock, its just something i picked up on and guess could be missed by some...

It also feels a bit like the tyre jump that you can get on RWD cars which have a bigger lock if turn in 100% lock (not advisable i know :) ) on a slippy surface with low tread and set off, but as I say, this was dry and maybe 75% lock max.

ALSO.. while we are talking steering lock... i notice on the RAPID that 100% lock feels soft with some tight resistance rather than on some cars where its like a solid stop point.

I know exactly what you mean. Its a feature of the 100% electric steering I'm afraid.

As for the knock you need to get it looked at for sure.

No Idea if it may be related, but my daughter's 8 week old SB  was recalled for a "Anti Roll bar and rolling bushes"  issue.

So it may be worth checking with Skoda if this recall, or campaign as they like to call it,  affects your car as well. I found out whilst having the rain sensor checked at the dealership. Skoda's own recall website doesn't show any issues but a quick call to customer services confirmed this as a new recall.

Hope this info it helps

Knocking from my front suspension / driveshafts on gearchanges or bumps was normal according to the stealer who I took it to - 2 others they drove did it as well?

Got no noise in forward motion, just reverse, but its not a major knock as such.

Cars going into the dealer in the morning for a quick look over while i wait to ensure its not a transport block left in (i looked and could not see anything) or something obvious.

Failing that, the car is already booked in 7th March and courtesy car booked via the standard process.

I did have the option of the car getting collected tomorrow, hire car provided and returned when fixed but thought i would go down the simple option to start with.

Its been in this morning for a quick inspection, everything is solid, no transport blocks in place, car going back in the first week of March all day.

They could also no replicate the issue.

It only does it after driving forward for a bit, ie.. if it does it, you cant then drive forward and back to replicate it which makes me think maybe its the caliper unsticking as you have to used the brakes to stop, before reversing ??

Its an odd one, at least everything is solid though.

The car was due into Skoda yesterday for investigation into the knocking noise.

However I cancelled this booking on Friday as the noise has stopped from every time i reverse to 1 once a week max and is less audible / feel now.

Not sure if it a ball joint just needed to bed in, (should not be the case i know) but i think its stopped since i went on a route which i normally avoid which includes half a mile of rough cobble stones which are driven at approx 20 to 30 mph.

Will keep my eye on it and update if it re-occurs etc.
