Is this a good deal?

Featured Replies

A colleague's father has a 5-6 year old Skoda Octavia diesel. Not being a diesel expert I am not sure if it's a 1.9 or 2.0 version but I suspect the model is probably Elegance/SE vice a VRS TDI. It has occasionally towed a small caravan or trailer and done about 60K miles. Following a limp home, a Leicester area Skoda dealer diagnosed flywheel problem and quoted £1500 for a replacement flywheel or a 'special' offer of £1100 for a clutch and flywheel. I know clutch wear is down to a raft of different reasons, towing, poor driving technique. Is this average mileage and a good price and lastly why is it cheaper for clutch and flywheel replacement? I have seen posts before about DMF and SMF, what is now regarded as the best option? The driver will not be a drag scene aficionado.

No that's extortionate.

Expect to pay around £500 including parts for a replacement dual mass flywheel and clutch at a decent independent garage.

If it's a 1.9, then it's suitable for a solid flywheel replacement, instead of the dual mass that can fail. If it's 2.0 then stick to a dual mass flywheel.

The bill for my new DMF was circa £1100 and done at clock garage Skoda indy. No clutch included.

Not sure if DSG makes any difference.

Luckily I wasn't paying though as the selling garage had put it in writing that they would get it done before I collected the car.

This was before he knew the cost, Lol.

It sounds like the invoice may have been inflated though if other mentioned costs are nearer the mark.

I would go for the clutch fitting too though, as the car has been used for towing.

Thanks. It sounds as if the dealer price was correct, however it is still puzzling how the clutch and DMF replacement was £400 cheaper than just the DMF.

It could be they are doing the clutch replacement as part of the fixed pricing for a clutch replacement.

As the parts are in the same location they are charging the reduced price for the clutch and just charging for the flywheel and a little extra labour.

Fixed price clutch on skoda website is £489
