Sky Q

Featured Replies

See this launches today, very expensive though, for my preferred box (Silver) which allows:

Watching TV in 2 rooms each extra TV would £99 up front

Watching on 2 tablets anywhere

Record 4 shows and watch a 5th Live

2TB Storage

I would also have to pay an additional £32.50 per month for the privilege and also stump up £350 up front which are branded as setup and Smart Features Fee.  The new boxes/remotes are only loaned and must be returned when your Sky service ends.

Think I'll be waiting a time before taking this on.

So what is it? Sky but wireless?

Ouch.

I'll stick with my HD box then.

Give it 12 months and they'll start giving away the boxes for free.

They did the same with the HD boxes going back a few years...

I read one review that said if you were a heavy SKY user, eg movies and sport as well as Broadband etc, then it wouldn't cost any more, which would be a good deal for the new equipment. Apparently it also comes with an engineer for installation included in the price.

The top package is pretty clever though, with the mini add on box also being a secondary wifi hot spot and it connecting either by wifi or mains circuit, depending on which it thinks is best. It also does away with SKY multiroom as well as eventually offering the hallowed 4K

Clever yes I agree but for those who are not heavy users but would like the 2nd room option, plus the ability to get away with the 2 channel limit of Sky HD it's far too expensive.

Maybe give it 12 months and see what happens.

I think they have thrown a lot of the extra stuff in to get people to adopt 4K. It's the only way your going to get it from SKY at least for the foreseeable future. I have movies and Broadband and I think it works out quite good for me too as from what I have read I wont need to retain my extra SKY GO + payments too.

Watching your recordings on another device anywhere is pretty cool.

The boxes , both main and mini also have powerline tech built in using their existing mains cable, although it looks like this, along with the 4K, will be unavailable as of yet.

It all appealed too me when I first got the email.. I even had a chat with an advisor about it when I rang up to cancel movies, and was advised that as I had been a loyal customer for 5 years - I would likely get a decent offer when it was released.

As we are on just the Variety Package + HD, it actually works out very expensive for us to upgrade, and I will be waiting till installation is free and the box etc.

I also don't know how I feel about only renting the box. OK great - something goes wrong and sky fix it. But I like that the HD box is mine.

The other bonus if you leave sky is that you can keep the recordings.

If you rent the Q box, cancel and you'll lose everything.

Must be an odd one out here, having lived overseas for a few years with no UK TV,on returning some 8 years ago found terrestrial free TV quite enough and have never paid for any sort of TV other than the normal licence fee.

No idea what Sky Q is.

Had a look at the SKY Q stand at the Trafford Centre and chatted to a helpful woman about the cost difference. Apart from a 'subsidised' cost of the new SKY Q Silver box (also includes new mini box/wifi extender and engineer call out to modify dish) it would cost me an extra £8 a month. For that you get the 4K ready thing (movies probably not included at 4K without extra subscription-but nobody knows for sure yet) big increase in the  number of simultaneous recorded channels, big storage capacity, great looking and operating menu system, multi room sort of thing and you can watch any of your recordings remotely on a tablet (more devices to follow). The only broadcaster missing from the affore mentioned 'remote viewing' is the BBC, but Iplayer covers that problem anyway). I suspect that after a few months I should be able to negotiate a discount for a years subscription, at least if I decide to upgrade.
