Engine stalled randomly, won't restart, no dashlights

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

As I opened the door to get out of my octavia to go to an ATM (pre-fl 2005 1.9 tdi 77kw) the engine just spontaneously died. I tried to restart it and it started then cut out a second later, after that it wouldn't start. I checked the usual things like fuel, all ok. Checked the under bonnet fuses which seemed ok and then saw the 1st relay (the grey one) was sort of loose, so I removed and reseated it. After this when I put the key in all the lights would come on and stay on, and the radio wouldn't turn off with ignition. I checked the fuses again and all seemed ok. Took the battery off and now when I put it back on I get the clock and odometer display, but putting a key in and turning it on does nothing, as well as the key won't lock the doors.

Did I blow my ECU somehow by reseating the relay?! ANY advice would help as it's currently completely dead.

Sounds like you need to get a fault code reader on it.

Doesn't work. Doesn't allow me to connect to the ECU with a fault code reader

Sounds strange. Don't know to much about that sort of issue, but hopefully someone with more knowledge of this sort of thing will be along shortly.

If it is your ECU then I can reccomened ECU Testing in Derby. May take a while but good work.

Good luck with the fix.

OK some updates:

I went to Skoda today and got a copy of the correct fusing setup... whoever had this car before me was a real messer and screwed all the fuses up, as it turns out I now have a LOT more features than I had before :D. The relay 4 was broken, I replaced it with some wires and it started up fine. I then bought another relay to replace it and this also works but now I've got another problem.

When I remove the key the car turns off... completely. As in no odometer, no memory, nothing. Any idea what would cause that?

As I worked out today it can't be ECU as it would still provide power, just not start the engine. Also thanks for your suggestion but towing the car 2100 miles isn't really an option  :p

You could always use Royal Mail.

Not sure you can post your complete car with them, but you could always remove the ECU. lol

Thankfully it's not the ECU.
