Metal-on-metal noise from back wheel

Featured Replies

Hi,

I had very strange situation on Tuesday, was driving quite slow (sleeping policemans on road) and suddenly after one of them I heard very loud noise from wheels - it was very distinct noise of metal grinding on another metal, it was clearly hearable when driivng forward, but when pulled over and tried backoff to parking space it became huge to a point I've stopped and tried to look it up.

Haven't seen anything, but was under impression that on wheel that made the sound heat shield around brake discs and brake discs themselves were touching. Have tried to fiddle about, but suddenly discovered that my car has no car jack to lift it up (need to buy one, any suggestions on what'll be the best option since I have to buy something). Nothing I was able to reach around tyre was loose or broken

I have tried couple of times drive forward and backward and to my huge surprise on another try it has dissapeared - was capable of driving normally, went that day over 70 miles, next day over 120 and there's nothing wrong with car now.

What I suspect - because I did had same issue in old car - that some small grawel rock has negotiated way between heat shield and brakes and was scratching, but from other end I do have strong feeling this heat shield was touching brake disc.

Any ideas?

Stone trapped between disc guard and disc?  Can happen and more likely to suddenly start in a slow speed scenario. :)

Jack each corner up and spin each wheel to locate the issue if it comes back.

I would have each wheel off and have a prod about at the disc surrounds to make sure they are secure

What year is the car?

Sounds like a rogue stone to me.

However, stick your fingers through the spokes of the alloy and pull on the brake disc guard.

Mine corroded and made a horrible noise when they finally failed. See here...

Trapped stone. It will sound like the wheel is being torn off the hub.

I'd vote for stone between guard and disc too. Good luck.

I had both disc guards corrode and rattle about, so used tin snips to cut them off.

Never bothered fitting new ones.

Easy to see if they're gone as they will wobble about.

One other thing worth checking - this happened to me once just after the wife had driven off a kerb (similar to the sleeping policemen you mention). Snapped coil spring at the rear - I assume a small part of the snapped coil got trapped between the shield/disk. Noise stopped after short distance. Car appeared fine. Only noticed the broken spring about 5 days afterward when I noticed the car wasn't level.

Hi,

After several days of driving without further issue I do agree it was a rock and it fall off after while.. Thanks for every input on that. I also had snapped coil once on previous car (Rover 75), so once I'll get chance wil look into it as well..

Now as to car jack - need to buy something and since I have a habit of buying things with functionality above average even if it's more pricey - what would you recomend? Is standard one does job well or you have something that can lift it up higher/safer/easier for reasonable price?

Thanks
