Memory seats stopped working

Featured Replies

I moved my drivers seat yesterday to search for some lost coins (fully forward). When jumping back in afterwards the memory settings had all been lost and it wouldn't allow me to re-store a position (no bong when trying to set).

After 20 minutes of trying To sort via various attempts to turn the car off, lock doors, change key etc etc I moved the seat to the rear most setting and got a bong. It then allowed me to save a setting again. Anyone know if this is a feature (I.e the way you clear the memory which I've triggered accidentally) or if it's a bug?

Someone else did post about an issue with the memory seats that required a dealer fix i.e. a known issue, you'll have to use the search facility to find it though as I can't remember who it was.

To restore to a memory position, you should just tap the button, right? I'm sure mine stopped moving when I released the button. Related issue?

If the engine is switched off and driver door open then its press and let go. Any other situation you have to press and hold the memory position until seat has finished moving to that position. There is a table in the manual showing the different situations.

Ours does that too.

Or more accurately:

- when I move the seat to my position (button 2 - seat quite a long way back) it always seems to work fine, press the button once, let go, and the seat continues to move.

- when my wife moves the seat to her position (button 1 - quite a bit further forward than mine) quite often it'll stop moving when she takes her finger off the button - she has to hold the button down.

While doing a scan with VCDS last night (for a different issue) I did notice an error with the driver's seat memory, can't remember the exact wording but it suggested the movement has been stopped due to insufficient voltage.

Ahh, that explains what I just posted above.

My wife has the seat so far forward, that I can't actually get in without moving it, so I press the button while stood outside with the door open.

If I've been driving, she can get in, close the door, and then press her button to move the seat forward.

Thanks for that, just solved the mystery!

My M3 does this too - ignition off, one press to move to the new position. Ignition on and you have to hold it to get there...

Im in same position with SWMBO being short. Ive now set the key memory so the seat moves to the position stored in whichever key was use to open the door. (Obviously i claimed the nice chrome tipped key  )

Sorry should have been clearer. I "had" two memory's set. They worked perfectly switching between the two either pressing the button once or pressing and holding depending on the circumstances. No previous issues, I understood how they worked.

After manually moving the seat fully forward last night I returned to the car this morning and both the memory options had been lost. Either pressing once or pressing and holding had no effect. It was as if the memory had been wiped. Furthermore I was unable to store a new memory after adjusting the seat manually.

It wasn't until I moved the seat manually to its full backwards position that I heard a soft "bong" and was then able to store a new memory position. All now working normally again. Just figured I had inadvertently wiped the memory or caused a fault by moving the seat fully forward.

Yes, its 'normal' behavior. It happened because you have moved the seat far forward/backward into extreme position so the seat 'freaked out' and lost the memory.

Here is how to reset seat memory: https://forums.tdiclub.com/showpost.php?p=1363504&postcount=2

Seems a little extreme - why does it need to do this?

Dont know really, I have read somewhere that seat needs to relearn its limits, something in that manner.

I dont think it necessarily happens first time you push your seat to the end, maybe it you repeatedly try the same thing.

Happened to me recently, I after searching some internet threads I have found this solution which worked for me.
