Police stopped 2,000 motorists 'doing over 100mph' in 2014-15

Featured Replies

Told my car its off to Germany soon,i am sure the grille smiled and one headlight winked at me  .

Then you go over, and get overtaken by a 1.2 polo :D.

I was cruising abroad at roughly 100mph on the bike (its actually faster that way, cos although its got loads left, it starts drinkin fuel like mad n i have to stop more :() n there was little hatches coming past. Not to mention the big audis.

If only the superb had a larger fuel tank.

If only the superb had a larger fuel tank.

See what it can do then ;)

its a regular monthly trip just been putting it off as very poor weather where i have to go.

Car is more than happy  at high speed, setting the cruise control at 140mph  that leaves enough pulling power if required to overtake others.

The frequent fuel stops give me a further chance to check tyre pressures and clean the rear screen and a welcome welfare break.

Now that many cars include GPS, SatNav and Radio perhaps it is time that legislation was introduced to make the radio emit a high pitched screech whenever a car exceeds the speed limit? I look forward to the SMMT promoting this sensible aid to drivers ;)

AH- another deluded person who's been brainwashed by the "SPEED KILLS " BRIGADE. If speed killed( WITHOUT ANY QUALIFICATION), then a very high percentage of RAF pilots would be dead at Mach SPEEDS. As would a lot of highly skilled police drivers who are authorised to exceed any/all limits. Like wise Ambulance & Fire service folks.

Looking at your idea- of screeching radios- how would a radio tell if a car was "proceeding at a speed excessive to the conditions", unless you consider 70 on a DC/MOTORWAY in conditions where fog/ black ice/ heavy rain is safe. There's no detection equipment ( other than a well trained HUMAN driver) that can work that one out.

Not to turn this into slag the Police, because we all need them there sometimes, trained and using common sense.

This one had some training, only she never quite got the hang of using the Blues and the Twos.

(Police Scotland senior Officers maybe need to rethink training and their responsibilities.)

AH <SNIP>

You clearly didn't read my opening post so I suggest you do so now and if you can, post a response that is vaguely related to speed limits.

My Dad's car used to have an audible speed warning

every so often a voice came from the front passenger seat saying

"The speed limit is 70, dear !"

If speed alone was as deadly as some scaremongers make it out to be, it would have been impossible for me to have crossed Germany a short while ago as there would have been corpses and wrecks strewn all over the autobahn. Speeding is a target as its easy to enforce. Its not subject to interpretation, unlike something like dangerous driving or whether a vehicle is fit for road use. Its not variable by individual unlike alcohol tolerance. Its a simple number that is trivial to measure. I want to see bald-tyre cameras. I want to see ****ers that drive however the hell they want have their cars taken from them but no, all we have is a dumb-ass camera with radar.

Maybe the police should try doing 70 in an unmarked car, some idiot hogging the middle Lane at 55-60 and a constant stream of tailgating German cars in the fast lane that is near impossible to safely join.

Sometimes just staying at the speed limit and remaining safe takes some skill.

I 100% agree that the Police should be doing far more in terms of enforcing lane discipline and prosecuting people for tailgating and aggressive driving. On a recent Motorway trip, doing less than 70 in a relatively slow moving outside lane with the crowded inner lanes moving even more slowly I had some moron driving a Bugatti inches from my rear bumper flashing his lights and sounding his horn. As soon as I could get out of his way he proceeded to do the same thing to the next car in the lane - I suspect that this was his usual driving strategy.

Back on topic, I believe that anything that can be done with modern technology to allow a driver to focus on what is going on outside the car would be beneficial - the Toyota Prius has a very neat HUD.

vxh26 / vxh28,

you have been a member here for a long time now, have you ever said what vehicle / vehicles you actually drive while always observing the NSL's

or not as the case might be?

Well, Ok, I was aware of the Pious' speed most of the time, but I was also aware of the HUD blocking my/the camera's vision of where I wanted to be looking for oncoming traffic at times, and at one point that it was going faster than I would have chosen in what appeared to be a 30mph limit. Such a shame that you've just demonstrated that the technology is flawed.

Winner.

Out of interest, long does it take you to get low on fuel running at 140?

The bad things about bikes is their tanks. Mine wont run out of puff till 155-160. But it puts the tank range down to about 100-120 miles if i keep cruisin fast. It is comfier though. The wind makes it comfy at that speed. Takes the weight off the arms. But its just better to cruise slower.

There are better n bigger bikes for silly fast speeds for long distances though.

Some vehicles actually get better mpg over 70 mph. Im not saying 100 but 75 to 85, and we are not in the 60s anymore. If the police want to inforce the limit get the manufacturers to impliment a maximum 80 Mph.

In the uk. The japanese have done it with the Gtr in japan. Limited to 112 in japan, only faster when on a track or different country. But then where would the revenue come from??

Which vehicles are you thinking of, and do you have any proof?

Well mine for a start, also the vrs i owned did around 25 mpg when pushed as aposed to 22. Yes it was chipped to 245 bhp as well. Do you have any proof other wise i very much doubt it.

When all these so called tests are done, none are done in the real world. The new so called hybrids doing astronomical mpg, What a joke. 100 mph should be speed limit on uk 3 lane motorways,

when weather and traffic permits. Which as we all know is never. Modern cars laugh at the 70mph limit and most are under 1200cc.

After multiple miles at 140+, how much air do you have to let out to 'correct' the pressure?

Mk1 Octavia vRS. Gets a consistently better MPG readout when over 80mph - once you're up to speed you can sit with the foot barely touching the throttle and ride the torque which - unlike a diesel - comes in much higher in the rev range. I find it's geared and tuned wrong for cruising at 70mph, which usually costs me 8-10 mpg.

No proof, just experience of driving it on motorways for over 30k miles.

All sat navs have the ability to record how fast you're going anyway, with your exact location and time of day too.

Just a matter of time until they start sending the local police the information.

My Garmin could get me banned, if i was one one riding... :D

The Dutch police tapped into that idea years ago lol More in line with finding speeding hot spots to set up speed traps.
