Car electronic weirdness

Featured Replies

Started the car today, got a blown bulb warning light, followed by an AFS has been disabled warning. Also the indicators and cruise control didn't work. No other symptoms apart from the radio not turning on with the ignition - it turned on immediately when I hit the on button but started at the start of my mp3s rather than from where it left off. Restarted the engine a few minutes later when I was stopped at traffic lights, all errors gone.

Has anyone seen this before? Hopefully it's some control module in the car having a random brain fart and I'll never see it again, I'm posting it in case anyone has seen it before and it's a symptom of something more serious.

How old is your battery?

I've had a few electronic gremlins recently....fuel gauge not showing, various lights coming on and off (dash and external) but the battery is top notch and all gremlins came and went doing their thing only once. Weird.

The battery is probably 5 years old - I haven't touched it since I got the car 2 years ago anyway. The engine cranks full speed and starts easily, so if it is a low battery it's a funny way of showing it. The car had been standing unused for nearly 3 days until the evening before this happened and there was no problem starting or error at that point. When it gave the error it had been standing for less than 6 hours.

It's on its way out , that's your problem

5 years is antique especially on modern cars with all the electronic loads they pile on it

On both my Octavias (since 1998) I made a point of changing the battery every 5 years and never had an electrical problem. The battery on my Superb was fitted last year (2015) so it will be replaced in 2020,

Over the last month the car has had gear box oil, both clutch cylinders, flywheel and clutch done and it will need 4 new tyres in the next couple of months (First winter since I've had winter tyres where it's not been worth fitting them), and I've just paid €390 to tax it for the year, so I'll probably do the battery before the coming winter unless I see more issues. There's been no further sign of the fault anyway.

Yes, only within the last 4 weeks I had one of those "error all show ups"  looks like the computer is running a check or telling us the battery life is coming to an end. hazard lights went all funny too as if they were missing a bulb.

I stopped the car, restarted after 5 min and all was ok again.
