Where's my washer fluid going?

Featured Replies

Two weeks ago I filled up my washer bottle as it was empty and today I've found out its empty again (no warning light, but don't have xenons).

In the past two weeks I've used the washers very little, certainly not enough to use 3l worth of fluid. There have been no obvious puddles underneath the car, yes the rear washer doesn't work well (possible leak that I need to check behind the cd changer) but I've not been using that much either.

I used Halfords berry scented fluid, so is easy to smell if leaking. Where can I look? If I do have a hole in the reservoir could this be fixed without removing everything to get at it? Or does the Octavia just use an excessive amount of fluid when you activate the jets?

Was your washing fluid tank closed properly?

Once I did that not carefully and after some while found out that it has gone more than I expected (probably evaporated. Especially because it was the winter fluid with certain spirit amount in it).

Check your boot spare wheel area.

Spare wheel area is fine.... However after doing some further investigation today I found that the water is coming out of the N/S rear wheel arch.

I've done a bit of searching on here so tomorrow I'll be removing the trim and cd changer to get to the pipe to sort it out

The water pipe for the rear washerjet has probably split - all the fluid will be in the tail gate. The pipe feeding the washer jet is made of rigid pipe and its split where it passes through the rubber sleeve and enters the tail gate.To grain the fliud, open the tail gate and on the inner side of the tail gate at the top (underneath the high level brake light) there is a small plastic bung - remove the bungand the washer fliud will drain out.

OR it has frozen and split the bottle had it once on a previous car, pain in the bum to change but not sure how these are, had to remove the wheel and wheel liner to get enough room to work, hopefully it'll just be a pipe off or split.

Right, just in from fixing this.

Removed trim (starting at the centre plastic boot lock surround working left) everything from window height down needed removing. Hardest part was removing the plastic studs around cd changer unit (found out after that the centre 'pin' of these needs removing first to make the whole lot easier)

The hose was separated from the connecting joint right in the bottom left corner. Some warming of the pipe and lots of swearing got the pipe and connector back together, some tape and zip ties around it to make sure it stays put in future.

What did surprise me was how dry the whole area was! Apart from a couple of dribbles that came out of the pipe the area was bone dry

The rear washer is like a jet now!

However a couple of problems; I have 3 screws left over and noticed that the rear high level brake light doesn't work, hopefully this is just a bulb and I hadn't noticed it over the last few days. Both issues shall be tackled tomorrow

Good to hear you got the washer issue sorted. The high level brake light is a series of LEDs (or bulbs if not LEDs) so could be a wiring issue if the whole unit is not working. When I got my Scout one of the bulbs had gone but a whole unit is relatively inexpensive so just changed the whole light.

Well done!
